Who Won The Roy Jones Vs Bernard Hopkins Rivialry?

When RJJ and BHOP were up and coming contenders, the media swarmed all over Roy Jones making him a household name.
At the same time, upcoming warrior Bernard Hopkins was left out in the cold and sadly neglected by that same media.

Most likely the difference between them was their boxing pedigrees, where Roy Jones was an Olympic medallist and Hopkins, a student of the now obsolete, US prison system boxing program.

This difference would see Jones become the darling of the mainstream media and Hopkins become a media made "Bad guy" of the sport.

Fans tend to pick sides in these situations, and the rivalry between Jones and Hopkins was no different. Those in the mainstream followed Jones while those less influenced by media hyperbole and kept their ear to the streets were supporters of Hopkins.

Personally, I admit to never really being a huge Roy Jones fan. I didn't actually start disliking him until in 1993 he faced and defeated by favorite MW boxer, Bernard Hopkins for the vacant IBF title.
Following that, as a loyal Bernard Jones fan, like Hopkins, I waited for the day when Hopkins would avenge his loss and gain his rightful recognition as a great fighter whose abilities were greater than the media hyped Roy Jones.
I know that day would come and all I needed to do was wait and watch as Bernard worked.

 

There's another thread posted recently about Bhop and RJJ and who has the better legacy between them with some good arguments for both fighters. It also includes a poll. It looks like most people think Bhop has the better overall legacy and perhaps ultimately won the rivalry.

 

Of the two, I always knew Bernard Hopkins was the more solid pugilist. Now the world knows what I knew in 1990.

B-Hop will probably be ranked higher on ATG lists but Roy was the much better fighter.

It's probably more accurate to say that in their primes, Jones was the more athletic of the two, with less attention to the fundamental.
As he aged and his reflexes slowed, the lack of fundamental discipline became more pronounced and BOOM, KO city. :yep

 

You can delete the "probably" and change to "DEFINITELY".
The only feats Roy Jones has accomplished that Hopkins hasn't is winning an Olympic medal and going up to HW and defeating Ruiz for the HW title.

Unless, being knocked out cold 5 times is included as an accomplishment. :smoke

Bernard Hopkins is the Poster child for clean athletics.

The man is definitely a Self-Made man, with zero help from media Hype (like Jones), zero help from PEDs, and no help from soft matches like Golovkin.

I'll never forget how BHOP made Foreman eat his words and look like a fool on national TV during Hopkins-Trinidad.

In fact, that Hopkins avoided drugs is probably one reason for his longevity, unlike someone like Vlad Klitscho whose body is ageing rapidly from career long drug use.
