Johnson was an inconsistent performer. He loses to one that no one would suspect he would. He beats most if not all the rest. Gibbons gives him a good go. Sharkey makes him think. However...

I don't see proof he beats Tunney. What are the best heavyweight boxer types that Johnson beat?

 

there's not a lot of people i'd pick over tunney with the same circumstances that dempsey fought him under.

 

Tunney would definitely be a great challenge.

I would bet more on Johnson's proven inconsistency than him being beaten at his best. I think Tunney gives him a helluva fight at even his best, tho.

I think a Prime JJ is too big and strong for Tunney. That version was as quick as a cat and strong as an ox. If JJ takes the cuffs off... I honestly can't see Tunney winning the fight.

 

How big was a prime Jack Johnson? He was 6 foot 1/2 inch and 192 pounds with a 74" reach against Burns, arguably his best heavyweight victim.

Tunney was 6 foot even, 189 1/2 with a 76" reach against Dempsey.

That is truly a monumental difference in size.

By JJ own account, he was in the best shape of his life for Jeffries. That version is 210. Which is a sizeable difference. Not only is Johnson heavier, he's clearly stronger and more powerful. To say otherwise, is kind of comical. It's like you're implying Johnson couldn't bully Tunney around the ring and maul him. He unquestionably has the size and strength advantage to do so, yet to hear you talk, you act like they are the same size and strength tier lol

 

Fighting an alfalfa farmer who was once a boxer doesn't qualify as greatest performance for me. Johnson's greatest victims were Langford, Burns, Jeanette, McVey. He was about 190 or lighter for each of these. His strength and talent was tested at the most stern level against those opponents, not against an inactive, scared Jeffries who likely thought the fight wasn't on the level only a few days before.

I recall SRL talking about what incredible shape he was for Camacho. He was ripped, jacked and had a six pack. He went down like a kite in a windstorm.

This idea that Johnson was some sort of giant is laughable by standards that followed. Johnson is one half inch taller and is two inches shorter in reach than Tunney. That is verifiable by the tale of the tape. Not a great difference.
