Toney had speed, power, and an inside game at 160.. Hopkins was good but was still raw. I think it would have been a good fight, but Toney would have won IMO.

    It's clearly Hopkins.

Toney was too inconsistent. We never saw Hopkins struggle or lose to guys like Tiberi and Thadzi when he was a champion. Toney's time at light heavy was an awful period for him with the Thadzi and Griffin loses.

Griffin showed some of the flaws in Toney's game. Griffin used load of lateral movement, constantly circling around Toney and making him have to adjust. In the 2nd fight he was able to take away Toney's right hand counter. Toney loves to make guys miss their right hand and then counter with his own, but Griffin simply stopped throwing the right hand and relied on his left and it took away much of Toney's offense, showing how Toney relies heavily on the counter right hand.

Also you have to question anything Toney achieved above light heavy due to the failed drugs test. He looked soft at 175lbs so you have to wonder if he bulked up naturally even at cruiser.

Hopkins can't handle speed. And Toney had the greater moments.

Hopkins can't handle guys with quick hands AND feet like RJJ, Taylor and Dawson, Toney had quick hands but was too stationary.

Hopkins beat plenty of guys who had quicker hands than him like Tito, Allen, De La Hoya etc as he had the footwork to get in position to get his shots off against these quick fisted fighters. But fleet footed fighters could get off first and be gone before he could close the distance and counter.

Toney isn't going to get off first and then get away like RJJ, Taylor and Dawson, he'd sit back and try and counter while being relatively stationary and then eventually be forced to chase Hopkins. Look what Nunn was able to do with his movement he was out boxing Toney for much of the fight before Nunn made the mistake of trading with Toney. RJJ did the same with his movement. Toney clearly struggles with movement and Hopkins has plenty of that.

And this isn't who was better but who ranks higher and Hopkins resume is simply better. He won more rounds than Toney did when he fought Jones Jr, he was able to move up from middleweight to light heavy and be a champion at both middleweight and light heavy, Toney did well at middle and super middle but when he went to light heavy he made no impact losing to Griffin twice and Thadzi of all people.

Toney is a great fighter and for many years he was one of my favourite fighters and even to this day is one of my favourites to watch, but he wasn't flawless and his lack of consistency and the failed drug test tarnish his legacy.

Agreed. If you study Toney's resume it's very clear that he is the greater fighter.

Not to mention the only reason he was on anything was because he had a brain injury that prevented his body from producing testosterone which lead to his out of control weight and he wanted to continue fighting.

Both atgs in my opinion. H2h it's no discussion. Toney was the far more talented and experienced fighter. Hopkins, as great as he was, accomplished more because he was able to maintain his ideal weight for a longer period if time

Actually Hopkins cannot compete with Nunn, McCallum, Jirov and Holyfield wins.

True. The Trinidad win ranks pretty high for me although not a 90s fight

So far the people coming on here voting for Hopkins have no point. They say Toney didn't have longevity. He got fat because of brain damage.

    That's what they're basing their **** on.
