Today would be Johnny Tapia's 49th Birthday...!!! Johnny Tapia MI VIDA LOCA Tapia made his professional debut on March 28, 1988 against Efren Chavez, a four round bantamweight fight. The fight ended in a Majority Draw. Less than a year later, Tapia nearly lost for the first time in his career. With less than five seconds to go in an eight round fight, Tapia knocked down and knocked out opponent Fred Hernandez. Lucklily for Hernandez, he was saved by the bell. The knockdown and subsequent 2 point swing in scoring, gave Tapia the Unanimous Decision. In his 18th professional bout, Tapia fought Roland Gomez for the USBA Super Flyweight Title, a steppingstone title. Tapia defended the USBA title four times, amassing an unblemished record of 4-0 with 2 knockouts. Tapia now in his 27th pro fight, went on to challenge for the NABF Super Flyweight Title, against an over-matched opponent in Oscar Aguilar. A TKO victory in round three gave the undefeated Tapia his 2nd title, albeit both titles were not the upper echelon belts that he desires. In his next fight, Tapia got an opportunity to challenge for the vacant WBO Super Flyweight Title. This time against the 16 win, 1 loss Henry Martinez. Tapia scored an eleventh round knockdown of Martinez, moments later referee Dennis Nelson halted the contest, awarding Tapia the victory and the belt. In Tapia's next fourteen fights, he defended the WBO Super Flyweight Title 10 times, amassing a record of 9 wins and 1 draw. In his 43rd fight, Tapia had the golden chance to add the IBF Super Flyweight Title to his growing resume. To do that, he had to get by Danny Romero, the IBF Champ. Romero, 7 years younger than Tapia, entered the ring with a record of 30-1. Tapia won via Unanimous Decision, capturing his 2nd major championship belt. With both the WBO & the IBF titles in his grasp, Tapia defended the titles two times before moving to the Bantamweight division. Tapia captured the WBA World Bantamweight Title via Majority Decision over 12 rounds against Champion Nana Yaw Konadu. Tapia had one fight, against an overmatched opponent Alberto Martinez before he stepped up against his biggest test; Paulie Ayala. Ayala entered the fight with a 27-1 record, Tapia sporting a 46-0-2 record. Before the fight began, Tapia went to Ayala's corner and shoved Ayala. A minor skirmish erupted, but nothing major occured. Tapia for the first time in his professional career suffered a loss, a 12 round Unanimous Decision. In his next fight, Tapia fought Jorge Elicier Julio for Julio's WBO Bantamweight Title. Tapia won a one-side 12 round Unanimous Decision, capturing another Title. Tapia defended the WBO title one time before he got his much anticipated rematch with conqueror Paulie Ayala. A catchweight agreed too by both was sanctioned at 124. Once again Tapia lost to Ayala via Unanimous Decision. After the fight, security had to intervene, leading an irate and incensed Tapia from the ring. Tapia's brother-in-law was arrested for punching Todd DuBoef, the stepson of Bob Arum. After the Ayala rematch, Tapia ran off 3 straight victories before gettin a chance to fight for another title, this time the IBF Featherweight Title against Manuel Medina. Tapia defeated Medina via Majority Decision to capture his 3rd major World Title in his 3rd Weight Class. Tapia was stripped of his newly acquired IBF belt for refusing to fight his mandatory, instead Tapia chose to stand opposite Marco Antonio Barrera. Barrera handed Tapia his 3rd career loss, and Tapia's fist loss not in a World Title fight (excluding Barrera's Ring magazine featherweight). In his next four fights, Tapia went even, securing a 2-2 record, including a win & a loss with Frankie Archuleta. In his next fight, Tapia stood in the ropes against Sandro Marcos, a career journeyman. Shockingly, Marcos put Tapia on the canvas with a potent left hook to the body. Tapia was counted out by referee Genaro Rodriguez, at 2:59 of the 2nd round. After a year and a half layoff, Tapia returned to the ring against Evaristo Primero. Tapia won a Majority Decision. Again Tapia took more than a year off from the ring, returning 3 years later to match up against Jorge Alberto Reyes. Tapia scored a 4th round KO victory. Tapia had 2 more fights before retiring from boxing. On May 27, 2013 Johnny Tapia was found dead in his home. Tapia died from heart complications. R.I.P. Johnny a great champion indeed. I spent time with Johnny & Paulie Ayala during the promo's for Tapia-Ayala1. That animosity & the shove Johnny gave Paulie was pure hype for the fight. They got along great, too great in fact we thought theyre more like best friends than two guys going to fight each other lol Chatted a lot with Johnny , Teresa & Freddie Roach great people plus I'd known Paulie all his career in Fort Worth Texas. It was a hell of a fight too was voted Fight of the Year
Both fights with Ayala were great. First one could of gone either way, but Tapia clearly won the rematch. Had good reason to be upset. That docu is definitely a tear jerker, they did a great job on it. I wished they did more like it.
