I have Dempsey number one head to head with Louis next. I would favor only Jeffries over Dempsey head to beat him and a toss up slight edge to Dempsey if matched with Louis. Other than these two Dempsey beats the rest of heavyweights head to head. Thanks

Dempsey makes my #4. Why? Well if you consider domination as a consideration he achieved this. Dempsey did what an exciting champion is supposed to do, he knocked guys out. He hurt every guy he fought. For at least 30 years he was considered as the GOAT heavyweight. Also, if other great champions were knocked out for the title, Dempsey deserves to go ahead of them because He lasted the distance when he was beat.

I agree about his size as well. ALthough I do give him a good shot against Louis and even better shot against Marciano.

How do you really put a guy like Dempsey h2h with a more modern fighter when the sport has evolved and training has advanced?

By the way, I'm almost certain Dempsey wasn't knocked through the ropes. It looks like Firpo pushed him. Either way, how can you hold that against him when most fighters today would be sent away in an ambulance if that happened.

Falling out of the ring can lead to serious injury. Dempsey climbed back in, and ferociously KTFO Firpo.

Because it just doesn't matter as much as the fighter himself.
Wherewithal and reflexes are more important than the material your gloves are made out of.

Your saying better technique and more refined training don't matter? Hard to believe

Great. He hit hard against a 170 pound fraud of a heavyweight. How is this proof of Top 5 head to head?

What would Lennox Lewis (or even Lionel Butler) do to Carpentier?

It was a response to a post about him having difficulty with Carpentier.

If I wanted to use an example of his power I would mention the Willard fight.

    Dempsey:

One of Boxings all time hardest punchers. Jack Sharkey the only man to fight both Dempsey and Joe Louis stated Dempsey hit harder adding "I never thought anyone could hit that hard".

Dempsey had an excellent defense bobbing and weaving to avoid blows while at the same time quickly closing the distance. Tunney stated Dempsey was a very difficult target to hit clean.

Dempsey was very quick in the ring of both hand and foot. Fleischer stated that Dempseys fists were quicker than Louis. That's very quick.

Fleischer rated Dempseys favorite combination of a right to the heart followed by a left hook to the chin the most devastating combination in hwt boxing history.

Finally Sam Langford stated this regarding Dempsey:

"Dempsey is the greatest hwt I have ever seen".

Most on these boards vastly underrate Dempsey a fighter who for many decades after he won the title was rated as its greatest hwt champion. His ATG characteristics, speed, will to win, durability, killer instinct and power would make him a very tough fighter for any champion to beat. His ability to generate hard punching power in both fists alone would give him at least a punchers chance against anyone but he had so much more than power for opponents to worry about.

Technique and training are tools employed by the boxer. But the most important qualities are the character, raw talents, and attitude of the boxer. Cus didn't just spend his time teaching Tyson technique.

He used past ATG's personalities as keys to success. Tyson always refers to Dempseys ferocity, not the way he threw a hook.

But maybe now we're getting too philosophical lol

I don't know how anyone could knock Dempseys punching technique. He threw punches perfectly, textbook. As an example a left hook should be a ultra short punch delivered within the width of ones shoulders via torquing of the legs and hips. Watch the hook that koed Sharkey, the hook that put Tunney down for 14.5 seconds and the next to last KD of Firpo and get back to me. Does anyone here know how to fight?????

Almost voted yes because I accidentally read "HW" as "CW" (cruiserweight)
