Evanders recent record was very patchy going into the Tyson fight.

He was very lethargic against Moorer, retired, came back and was given all he could handle against Mercer, gassed alarmingly in the 3rd Bowe match and was stopped and looked like garbage against the much smaller Bobby Czyz before winning on a retirement.

Holyfield hadn't scored a legit stoppage in years and was basically seen as damaged goods hence King thinking he had a safe, easy payday for Tyson. Basically no one picked Holyfield to be competitive let alone win against a Tyson that most thought was going to clean out the division again.

People overrated Tyson then much as they do now it seems.

 

Also for losing to Joe's son while outweighing him by around 30 pounds.

Yep. I remember as clear as day as most people picking Tyson to kill evander and for many of the reasons you listed. The reality at the end of the day however is that BOTH men were past their best.. Not just one or the other.. Although Tyson seems to benefit from the generous amount of latitude around here more than Holyfield does.

 

I was one of the few, who actually picked Holyfield to win. Not because he was doing so well, but because I knew Tyson was fighting poor competition and only going a round or two. The signs were all there for an upset. But it still surprised me when it happened.

 

Yeah true. I've read and heard he'd get up to over 250 sometimes.
And Tyson weighing 190 coming out of prison sounds fishy. He weighed that much as a teen. He looked thick and muscular coming out of prison.
At 190 he'd be looking gaunt.

 

That's what happens when you are off steroids a few years.

 

Tyson himself admits he severely under trained for the first fight and thought that holyfield would be easy given the fact he won his previous fight on cuts.

 

There's a photo of Mike with Don King, publicity shots somewhere in the desert - maybe Vegas, and Mike looks grossly out of shape and extremely heavy (probably weighing in the 250 lbs range). He's sporting his black trunks and sock less black footwear while King is wearing long shorts, a white collared shirt, knee high socks and white tennis shoes. King's shuffling his arms around like he's performing the salsa. The photo was taken in fall of '89 I believe and it's appeared in a Tyson book and a few boxing magazines.

I remember Tyson's neck being thinner coming out of prison. Of course he never picked up weights or did any training. He also could've done certain drugs in the clink, that's not uncommon. But he was nowhere near the 190 lbs some are claiming. Like what's been documented before, Tyson weighed over 200 lbs as a teenager entering the ring against Bobby Stewart at Tryon.
