Why was HBO 'reluctant' to sign GGG 3 years ago?

Probably his English and being from a country with barely any population here

Introducing the Mexicans to him, having him beat up minorities who have no chance, and calling out a fighter 2 classes below him because everyone hates him.

 

HBO has a bias against white fighters, especially EE fighters that just never sell well in the US. US sports fans just don't want to see white boxing champs, it makes them sick to their stomach. This is why GGG had to come up with "mexican style" to get any help.

well id imagine its because of his current star status is not what ud expect or want from a older fighter who has a style so fan friendly like his?

He needs a real threat to his reign and not limited skilled lambs. He needs the equivalent of Mayweather to his Pacquiao, a Leonard to his Hagler, a Tyson to his Holyfield. Canelo is not the man for the job.

canelo is a step in the right direction atleast.. he wanted cotto but cotto wanted NONE of him. i wish he woulda just stuck to his word and fought ward at 168 but to be fair GGG should not have to move up just because his weight class is dodging him

 

No natural ethnic fanbase in the U.S. for GGG, and HBO didn't have a desire to develop an Eastern Euro fighter's fanbase from essentially scratch- traditionally, those guys were brought in to simply be opponents for house fighters. Heck, Pirog didn't get brought back for beating Jacobs- they blackballed him off the network!

If it hadn't been for a management change, I doubt GGG would've gotten backing from HBO. Even then, they paid a discount for the ratings he delivered for them.

 

Because he could not speak a word of english and they thought he had no fanbase remember he is not even Mexican and is not american he is coming from a unknown place
