I'm glad someone has decided to start this thread for the millionth time. It needed to be covered again.
Where do we even start Young To$$er? There's been that many, it'd probably take all day to list all of them. I'll just look at the most notable ones: Barry McGuigan: After speaking with Ray Leonard on his visit to Belfast in 1992, Barry wanted to come out of retirement to fight Roy on his HBO debut. But Roy told Stanley Levin that he thought it was too soon. Roy's closest friend, Derrick "Smoke" Gainer, has since revealed in his best selling autobiography 'Up in Smoke' that Roy was terrified of two things in life: Going to the dentist, and being anywhere in the company of Irishman. (Serge has previously mentioned this) Gainer reveals that Roy was so perturbed in the company of Irishman, that not only would he not fight McGuigan or Collins, he wouldn't even accompany Gainer to watch a Wayne McCullough fight. Razor Ramon: Early in 1995, Vince McMahon visited Roy's hometown of Pepsi-cola, in the hope that Roy would feature in Wrestlemania XI, at The Hartford Civic Centre in Connecticut. Vince states that he offered Roy $20m, which included the opportunity to fight "Double J" Jeff Jarrett later in the year at Summerslam. But Roy turned down the mega money offer, to instead fight car crash victim Vinny Pazienza. Denver Pyle: The much loved American actor who famously played Uncle Jessie in The Dukes Of Hazzard, repeatedly challenged Roy to a fight late in 1997, after Roy had expressed his interest in fighting a HW after his spectacular rematch win over Montell Griffin. But Roy repeatedly turned him down, feeling as though he was in a no-win situation, due to Roy's family being huge fans of The Dukes Of Hazzard, as well as the fact that Denver was somewhat past his prime at 76 years of age. Roy did later speak of possibly fighting Denver in 2000, despite the fact that Denver had sadly passed away around 3 years earlier. Naseem Hamed: In late 2007, Frank W tried to bring Naz out of retirement for a lucrative fight early in 2008, at a CW of 168 pounds. But Roy wasn't interested and preferred to fight Trinidad instead at a CW of 170 pounds, despite Frank W offering considerably more money than Don King, which would also have included a future fight against the hard hitting Willie Limond. Further ducks: Michael Nunn Steve Collins Dariusz Michalczewski Gorilla Monsoon Graciano Rocchigianni Lennox Lewis Carl Lewis Nigel Benn Chevy Chase D*ck Van D*ke Erik Morales :good
You know I always respect your opinion mate, but I think you've been harsh. If you look into it, I don't think he really ducked Mace Windu. However you look at it, Roy was the A-side. He was the consensus P4P no.1 fighter in the world. He was the unified LHW champ. You couldn't have expected him to go to Germany for Dariusz, nor could you have expected him to travel to space to fight Windu. :good
There was talk of a possible exhibition in 2007, after Roy had fought Anthony Hanshaw. But Bob had been dead for 80 years at that point, so you know Roy wouldn't have got credit for that, whatever the outcome.
