Id pretty confidently pick Stander. When he actually trained he was a tough guy with a good punch. After the Frazier fight he basically stopped training and became a fat slob/punching bag.
The Fat Slob Punching Bag (FSPB) title could apply to either. I would pick Bey, who had quicker hands. I think Stander's KO of Shavers was a fluke....I'd pick Earnie in a rematch no problem. Shavers had something like ten fights that year and had an off night. Bey's victory over Page is a better win and proved that he had some ability.
Bey wasn't bad at all, but he was one of those 1980s heavyweights who was matched in a few consecutive difficult matches under the promotional banner of Don King. He didn't get well paid for his trouble. King had a constant round-robin of his contracted heavyweights going on, and it was quite a murderous schedule, especially if you got on the losing end twice in a row. He was a decent prospect but quite inexperienced when he upset Greg Page in a tough close fight, then got a shot at Larry Holmes, didn't disgrace himself there either, stopped in the 11th. Then three months later he was thrown in with a motivated and rejuventated Berbick, and did very well until again being stopped in the 11th. After that he declined quite rapidly, but still he almost beat Tyrell Biggs in 1987, had Biggs badly cut, pouring blood, and desperate.
Bey easily. If you want a better match for Stander, how about him and Wepner. It could be billed the " Butcher vs. the Bayonne Bleeder "
These are good points. Bey's success might have been limited but he was primarily beaten only by quality men. Stander lost to s lot of journeyman and trial horses on top of the good fighters who beat him. I think when both stander and bey were well trained and motivated, it might have been a decent fight but bey wins convincingly.
when Stander was trained he was a tough dude, He took Shavers best and stopped Earnie and gave Frazier a game go. An in shape Stander stops Bey but the later version of Stander untrained was beatable but Bey lost like 14 of his next 18 fights after fighting Holmes.
