Hopkins was 50 against Kovalev. Tiger was 39 against Foster. ELEVEN years age difference. Hopkins hasn't looked good in years. Hes been successful as a spoiler winning fights by minimizing the action enough to stay in them and stay one step ahead but he hasn't been Bernard Hopkins in well over a decade. I have no problem predicted that IF Hopkins ever fights again (a very big IF) he look as bad or worse and will have zero meaningful wins (if he ever wins at all). Hes proved me wrong before but as bad as hes looked lately hes clearly outlived his shelf life as a boxer. Now, Tiger still had wins over two top contenders and a HOFer left in him after losing to Foster.

Hopkins was beating guys like Pascal ( Ranked as high as #3 ), Cloud ( ranked as high as #2 )Beibut Shumenov ( ranked as high as #6 ).

So let's not act like Hopkins wasn't beating contenders. He also had a style that aged much better.

Only Kovalev made him look bad.

I think all three crush it .. I see Foster taking Kovalev's head off ... I see Greb who I see as a modern day Calzaghe with an iron chin leaving GGG swinging at air and Louis would fight at 220 or so would clean house ..

Joe Louis fought 10 Hall of Famers.

How many did Wladimir Klitschko fight?

Which of Wlad's opponents is a lock for the Hall?

Would it be Bryant Jennings? Alex Lepai? Mariusz Wach? Francesco Pianeta? Sultan Ibragimov? Ruslan Chagaev? Charles Shufford? Calvin Brock?

    Give me a break.

Who was going to stop Louis from his consecutive KO streak? Lamon Brewster? Ross Puritty? Corrie Sanders (who was knocked out by Nate Tubbs and Rahman?)

Joe Louis handles Wlad's assortment of nobodies just fine.

Louis fought at his optimum weight!

If 220 was ideal for him, he would have fought at it!

He would slow down and be fat at that weight.

I know little of Kovalev so will leave him out. Greb and Louis most likely win every fight but GGG may beat Greb but I will wait to see how GGG shapes up in future before I say one way or the other as GGG may still turn out to be a dud.

Well yes Greb did fight some very good competition with mixed results might I add but he had like over 200 fights against very questionable opposition.

Louis would have had not even a single loss, and would have beaten all the better fighters earlier, set his records earlier and retired earlier than wlad.

foster would have achieved success before sergei, with the same record, and would probably have moved up to HW.

no real competition in 3Gs resume to trouble him.

why - becos they would have done more than these guys. they would never have simply limited themselves to their resumes.

your question is inhernently flawed - tying these atgs to basic resumes isn't gogin to happen, they would want to achieve much more.

Louis also lost to hall of farmers and fought quite a few of them who were passed their peak.

Is there anyone Louis beat that Wlad would be an underdog against?

No. As stated boxing from 1935-1945 was a down time for talent. Even Ring Magazine said this was the weakest time for heavies, and ranked Wald's time above it.

Corries Sanders was far more dangerous than Galento and Braddock who floored Louis. Wlad's time featured much bigger men and a more dangerous group of punches. He also fought some quick boxers, the type that gave Louis trouble. I'm not sure Louis would not have been undefeated from 2004-2014 as Wlad was.

There is no way Greb could do better than GGG did vs GGG's competition. GGG just destroys his opponents.

I think GGG with those 1920 gloves would be a lethal weapon and would probably beat the fighters who beat Greb, with the exception of Tunney north of 170 pounds.

The funny thing about GGG is everyone focuses on his power. His balance, defense, and jab are very good too. And in the amateurs, he was an excellent counter puncher, a skill he hasn't needed to use much as a pro. Package in an iron chin and a seek and destroy style where he doesn't mind getting hit, and you have one tough out.

The type that may be able to beat GGG is a very fast fighter who has a much longer reach, enough power to get GGG's respect, and strength to tie him up on the inside. Add in a top level chin and a rig cage of steel. But such a fighter is rare.

Based on the power level of fighters who KO'd Foster, I think Kovalev can get him out of there too. It would be a very good fight. I'd favor Kovalev as his timing is a bit better. I flat out question Foster's chin when hit vs guys who can punch.

Which fighter ever made GGG miss? None. Calzaghe had some close calls and fought very few aggressive swarming types. He was also taller than Greb that matters. Greb liked to mix it up close, and that's not the way to beat GGG. I think Calzaghe was just durable enough at 168 when hit, and is vulnerable to power hitters with skills.

Louis best weight was well under 220. Sure he can be at that weight, but then he loses some speed and stamina.
