I'm not sure how much stock you can really put into stories about sparring sessions and a dominant KO record against limited opposition. There's been plenty of cases where this happens, and they go on to have different results.

Take Shane Mosley, Roy Jones, and John Mugabi for instance. Mosley had a very glossy record at 135 against modest opposition, same with Jones at 160. The Hopkins win has gotten better over time, but is still viewed by most as a solid win when both guys were improving as fighters. Mugabi had an amazing record on paper going into the Marvin Hagler fight against modest opposition.

Actually, all 3 of them had beaten better opposition than Valero did. Mugabi had the misfortune of having less champs to beat for less titles. They all had 3 different career paths. RJJ is an ATG, Mosley is a great on a lower tier, Mugabi is viewed as a good to very good fighter, nothing more.

Going by the Antonio DeMarco fight, it seemed as if Edwin Valero had lost some power moving up in weight. However, he did show a better skillset than some thought he did. Picking punches well, didn't look crude and sloppy as he sometimes did, and did it with compromised vision. The fact that DeMarco was probably his best win leaves a big question mark on how he would perform against top level opposition.

If I were to make a guess. I think he'd fall the very good, B+ category of fighters. I would have loved to see him against Marquez at 135. He probably would have been good enough to win a title at 140, hell even old Judah did, but I don't know how well he really does against the top level opposition. I can see an experienced great like Marquez beating him, especially since it appeared Valero lost sole power at 135, or a solid dither like Bradley at 140.

 

I don't think Valero even beats Guzman, let alone Pacquiao, Marquez, etc.
