Marciano and then Floyd then Ward. Marciano because he seemed to just luck to it so many times. Its bizzare how he kept his record, he must have had something special to do that. Floyd because he fought till nearly 40 with it. Ward 3rd because his careers not over/on hiatus though its still a damn fine run when he was fighting. Cowardzaghe because he fought no one for 10 years - thousands of semi decent boxers could pull that off. Why is he even on this list, for the wooden spoon?
are you really trying to rewrite the fact that ex unified champ 20something Kessler was favourite over non titlist ward?
With regards to Floyd's best etc... Best performance? Corrales, By far. That's the best performance ever seen at that weight. Period! Best win? Could be Canelo If Canelo was to unify MW. Biggest win? Manny. Has to be.
I never suggested you were. If you glance at Floyd's resume, straight away most people are going to think there's no comparison. But again, if you look at what Rocky was up against, you see things from a different perspective. Like I said in an earlier post, if your average world class HW beat Rocky's opponents, it wouldn't be anything special. But what Rocky did was special because he was limited technically and he was very small. Floyd was a lot more gifted, and he was only ever outweighed and completely outsized in one fight, which was against Oscar. Floyd's road to 49-0 was much easier than Rocky's road to 49-0. It's not just about the names on their resume, it's looking at how hard it was for them to achieve what they did. A guy with a 68" reach has no business at HW, and considering he also wasn't gifted with speed and skills, it's a great accomplishment. Basically, Rocky's resume isn't great, but he had a much bigger mountain to climb than Floyd.
Let's get some perspective. Corrales, Castillo and Cotto were very good-great wins. His win over Ricky was very good, but Ricky had no business at WW, and Floyd had an 8" reach advantage. His win over Canelo was very good, but it should never have been at a CW, and Canelo was inexperienced against elite fighters. There was nothing remotely impressive about beating a faded Manny who was obviously injured, or struggling against the limited Maidana. Rocky's win over Louis was clearly better than those two wins.
What was good about beating Chavez and Hernandez? Without being disrespectful to them, they hardly beat anyone of note, they lost to every good fighter they faced, and Floyd was taller than them and possessed a reach advantage of 6-7 inches.
How on earth is Maidana 1 one of his best wins? Floyd struggled like hell and Maidana is basic. There was nothing great about that.
Very interesting topic, I liked to read all of the first 4 pages. My initial opinion was that Floyd record was the most impressive, for all the title fights and everything that was said before. Then I started to buy in to the argument that Marciano did it in a different era, in the top weight category and overcoming greater obstacles. If this was a question about the best boxer or the boxer with better accomplishments I would still say Mayweather. But this is a question about who's record is most impressive, and you have to factor in the fact that Marciano had heavier obstacles to get by to get to 49-0. It's impressive how many times Marciano SHOULD have lost but was able to snatch a win. Mayweather was magnificient and won close fights and everything but didnt have to win so many tough fights, tough in the sense that he was heavily behind in the score or hurt and needed dramatic comebacks. So looking closer in effect MArciano record is more impressive. Calzaghe is clearly behind, Ward is still active and it's too early to judge but if he retired today even with the impressive string of wins he had he would be lacking longevity and to be considered with the first two. Everything IMHO
Ok. I notice a pattern here so let's try this again. Which pre shot version of Joe Calzaghe would have stopped Joe Louis in the 7th round? Which performance or performances of Calzaghe's indicate(s) that he would have stopped Louis?
