This will get moved to the classic. But I just think we need to put Barry in his place a bit this week. And some of his fans remember him as this mythical beast that tore the title away from the best in the division. Anyhow Barry was a good champion , but how does he do against the real number 1 in his division at that time?
Nelson would disect and stop him late. McGuigan was a solid fighter but he became mythical due to the state of Northern Ireland and his ability to unite at the time. Anyhow fighters who lose to McDonnell and Steve Cruz are not beating Nelson.
He was probably a better fighter on the way up than after he won the title. He style was made for Nelson he would have been stopped, Nelson was a level above.
Nelson by TKO would never of gone to the judges cards. McGuigan's style would of been made for Nelson he would of got pulled out after halfway. Barney Eastwood steered him well clear of Nelson rightly so.
I agree with most of what you said, but against McDonnell he was well past his best and you must know the story behind the Cruz fight surely?
He was 28 when he lost to McDonnell and only been a pro for 8 years I don't by into the theory that he was well past his best. Maybe he was just a well managed fighter?
Please explain how you believe Barry McGuigan would have knocked out Azumah Nelson -- a man whom McGuigan and his team seemed to make a concerted effort to avoid.
Nelson by stoppage in a very good fight, say what you like about McGuigan but he loved a fight, brave as anybody and was very talented.
I don't post I read the stuff on here . Some good mostly rubbish. Guys offering people out and that....everyone , at the time , loved Barry, but to say he knocks Nelson out !!! That sort of stuff is why I don't get involved
