Go with The Devil and Sonny Liston!

How would you compare the Charles and Quarry book?

I liked both of them although there seemed to be more content in the Quarry book.
Cheers for Sonny Liston tip, I'll get ordered off Amazon

I got my copy of Liston from ebay for $11.99 a year ago. Brand new hard bound copy. Depending on the day, Evilbay can come in handy.

I've read all 3 of the recent books on Liston. 'The Devil & Sonny Liston' is OK but the authors poetic style grates after a while. Not a book I would read again. Paul Gallenders book tries very hard to paint Liston as a nice & misunderstood guy but so ignores his dark side it becomes unbelievable. 'Sonny Liston' by Rob Steen is the most balanced of the three in my opinion.

Also read the Chuvalo & Quarry books. I liked Chuvalo & you can only have admiration for the way he has coped with the tragedies in his life , he was also a good fighter, however he does seem to offer an excuse for every fight he lost & he lost quite a few. I enjoyed the Quarry book more.

This book never gets mentioned but I thought it was great -

'Name of the Game' - by Adam Heach- the story of Thad Spencer & his manager Willie Ketchum- also covers Liston, Amos Lincoln & other heavies of this era. Read it twice already.

Would also highly recommend these two

'The Life & Crimes of Don King' - Jack Newfield - really takes the lid off the machinations & fixes that go on in world boxing.

'The Road to Nowhere' - Tris Dixon , boxing writer Dixon travels around America, mostly by Greyhound seeking out old & retired champions, some long forgotten. What he finds is sometimes uplifting & sometimes tragic.A good read.

Thanks for the tip on the Ezzard Charles book, I' ll read that next.

It's quite entertaining, if a little strange. Certainly I would take some of the claims made in that book with a pinch of salt. Amongst other things he says Archie Moore tanked his fight with Marciano. At one point it also segues into a discussion about the size of Liston's d*ck!

Just got 'Primo Carnera' by Joshua S. Page. He was always tragic tale was Carnera and I've always been interested in the man and the fighter.
Will start it after my current read.
