Bench Press has basically zero athletic relevance. Deion Sanders didn't think much of the bench press and they asked him why. His response "Do I have to cover Jerry Rice with a bar strapped to my chest". Terry Norris' benching did nothing for him against Julian Jackson. All that bench strength, but he didn't wrestle him in the clinch for ****. And he went down after 1 punch.
RJJ is the only answer. I'd imagine guys like Tyson, Norris, Benn, Marciano, Foreman, Manny are up there (I'm talking ALL facets of athletic ability). Roy has to be the first choice though. He was a freak of nature!
Yup, the answer can only ever be Roy Jones. There's absolutely no debate about his position as number 1.
I ask you, as I rate your opinion on 99.9% of things (providing you know), what kind of level athlete is Roy in other sports/across the board, though? Guys like Rafa, Kobe etc are beasts (they do it all). Is Roy that level of athlete, or just the best of a bad bunch in Boxing? Does that make sense? :think
Roy Jones is the most talented athlete when it comes to boxing that I've seen. But if we are looking for the best all around athlete it will probably someone from the early 20th century. A hundred years or so ago, the general perception was that one body type would excel in all sports, and we had athletes like Jesse Owens who competed successfully in many sports. Since then things have changed, we know now that the body best suited for swimming isn't the same as the body best suited for high jump. So athletes has become more specialized. Swimmers have long upper bodys and short legs, shot putters are thick and stocky and so on. A guy like Mayweather is extremely gifted when it comes to boxing, his long arms and quick reflexes makes him perfect for the sport, whereas a guy like Jefferies was more of an all around athlete.
It really is hard to say because he hasn't proven his abilities in other sports, but his athleticism in boxing was unlike I've ever seen - the great combination of speed, explosiveness, reflexes, energy, strength, power. He was able to break textbook rules because of this ability, which would make him all the more difficult to figure out. In my opinion, I think he's the best boxer ever in his prime, at his prime weight (MW). He was past prime by the time he cut weight from heavy to LHW for the Tarver fight, and even in his victory he no longer looked the same. Bo Jackson is widely known as the greatest athlete ever.
