Whether he hates Ali or not, the fact remains it was a dive. The flick of the wrist Ali landed on Liston didn't have the power and Ali knew it. Ali could not believe it floored Liston and he should know
People are just confused. They say the punch was not strong enough to knock him down but it was the speed of the punch that did the job. Liston even said post fight the punch was fast. It's the fastest punch in history.
Liston taking a dive has nothing to do with trashing Ali. There are some people who believe that any post that does not laud or compliment Ali is unacceptable. That needs to be treated in a doctor's office rather than on a message board.
Wonder who gave Nat Fleischer the authority to "stop the fight"? Lots of shaky info needs to be investigated still even today. Boston, the original site of the proposed "fight", got the fight thrown totally out of the state because it smelled so bad "pre-fight". And of course the fight turned out to be just that.
Liston took a dive so well that he asked for smelling salts in his dressing room after the fight. This was ask with the room empty with just Liston and his handlers present. His trainer stated Liston never asked for smelling salts before. You can also see Sonny stagger to the left after the fight was called and everyone was rushing into the ring.
It's not a fact. There's no evidence of that. That was definitely not a flick of the wrist. It was a straight right with the full snap of the shoulder. That's a power punch.
In the minute that had preceded the blow in question, Ali had bounced a number of nice right hands off of Liston's head and, with the exception of a single right to the bodyy, had avoided all of Sonny's attacks. Moreover, Liston didn't look capable of tracking the champion down. So, frustration may well have already begun to set in, especially given the trouble that Ali had caused him the first time around. Then Ali caught him leaning forward with a quick right hand near the top of the head. Liston pitched forward landed on the mat- and the embarrassment he may have felt might well have compelled him to remain there. I say it's a perfectly legitimate stoppage, based on what transpired in the opening minute.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prxnGjKjxoo Ali jumps off his right foot, fully snaps the shoulder, and hits Liston flush on the side of the chin. Listons head shakes on impact.
He didn't put his shoulder behind the punch.....That's a fact It wasn't a knock out punch.....That's another fact
Whenever I scored a knock down i could feel the shudder up my arm into my shoulder. Ali knew he hadn't hit Liston hard enough.
"A guy", yes. But like Chuvalo said, Liston could take a punch and he believes to this day something was wrong.
