Anyone else going to this? Stephen Simmons has pulled out so now John Thain is headlining in his fight against Chris Jenkinson. Again, not any 50/50 fights on the cards but a good opportunity to see the young talent in Edinburgh showcased.
Tickets are £40 general admission. Agree that this is too steep given what it is. However, we've not always been lucky enough to have regular shows in Edinburgh so whilst these are still put on i'll go along and support the local fighters. Not sure how much I expect any of them to go on and achieve - hopefully John Thain can get going again as he was starting to build up a bit of momentum a couple of years back and is a lovely boxer. Heard that Stephen Tiffney has a style that will suit the pro game as well. Busy night for Terry McCormack!
Apparently the last one was quite lively and pretty much sold out - I'd expect the same tomorrow. Lewis Benson seems to shift a few tickets. Not sure how much Simmons pulling out will affect numbers.
Really hope that MGM persist in putting on shows in Edinburgh, there hasn't been enough in the last 20 years for any boxer to build a proper following and regular shows will keep boxing in the limelight. Best of luck to all the Scottish lads fighting at the show!
Totally agree David. Alex Arthur was the last to put on regular shows in Edinburgh and he became disenchanted with it due to the lack of ticket sales I believe. Saturday night wasn't a sell out, there were a fair few empty seats but they are back out in May and in the bigger hall in Meadowbank with apparently one or two of the boys fighting for titles (Celtic or Masters I'm assuming). The calibre of Journeymen they got along was pretty good - Chris Jenkinson and Mitch Mitchell to name a couple. The exception being the Bulgarian they brought along to fight Lewis Benson. Where they found him from i'll never know. Benson didn't land a single punch on him in the first round yet he still retired on his stool before the bell went to start the second. Absolute embarrassment and it looked as though Benson was more annoyed than anyone in the hall. All in all a decent nights worth of boxing and if I had to pick a stand out performance/fight I'd say Stephen Tiffney. He looks to have a style that will see him do well in the pros and I expect him to earn domestic honours at least.
i have to disagree pal, 6 x 4 rounders is nowhere near good enough if they want to bring in the fans on a regular basis. i can understand some of the lads being on four rounders but what the hell did john than gain from a 4 rounder against a guy that he has already beat over 6 rounds? :huh:huh if mgm scotland are serious about bringing more shows to edinburgh and want fans like myself to fork out £40 + then sam kynoch really needs to put on shows that will capture the imagination or at least be worth the money.:good
