Ali liked to lean back. Guys with quick reflexes and head movement can get away with this. Jack Johnson did it too. Most of the time it worked for Ali other times he was floored by hooks ( Banks, Cooper, and Frazier )

Do we have yet another double standard by McVey?

Jeffries wasn't in there to punish his brother, who was also a professional fighter. He was in there to sharpen up a bit, and he does look sharp, agile and powerful.

It's not impressive. Sorry. Just a couple of rubes prancing about.

And his brother Jack had only a few fights, most of which he lost.

Exactly. Watch Roger Mayweather training noobies with the mits. One of the first moves he teaches them is a quick lean back.

You don't have to be sorry to anyone but yourself for not recognizing greatness!

Go show to this clip to anyone at a gym, tell them it is greatness, and bask in the sweet laughter.

You are reading far too much into this little clip. It's just not there. And to be fair to Jeffries, something like this shouldn't be the basis for ana lysis of his style or his level of ability. Only those already disposed to hail his greatness or tear him down would read anything more into it.

Ali and Jeffries should NEVER be mentioned in the same sentence when discussing defensive capabilities!
Jeffries had his nose broken three times ,had a cauliflower ear ,and finished up with scar tissue that would have given him instant access to Frankenstein movie parts.
All from only 24 pro fights!

    NB Jeffries brother was unadulterated
    sh*te!

I'm not championing this as a holy grail for proof of Jeffries abilities. It's just a nice little clip showing that the man had tremendous boxing skills and athleticism.

I joined the best boxing gym in Chicago just yesterday. Never officially boxed a day in my life. The owner told me I have great power. There were golden gloves champs there, and some pros, all commenting on my power. They were giving me some decent attention.

You know where I learned that power? Not from boxing gyms with their modern methods. I learned it from Joe Louis' book, shadow boxing like Robinson, and shoulder and back exercises from Bob Fitzsimmons.

If I had joined a boxing gym at 15 years old, and skipped my extensive boxing history lessons, I would be just like everyone else. They do everything good, but they can't really punch.

And honestly I don't even think I hit that hard. Because I don't compare myself to golden glove champions. I look at Joe Louis, Jim Jeffries, Dempsey, and Tyson, and realize how far away I am from punching like them.

There is so much wrong with the way boxers are trained today. They don't teach people how to really punch. They teach them how to look good doing it. So frankly, if they laugh at Jeffries, that wouldn't mean a thing to me.

He wasn't comparing them as defensive fighters. He was merely stating an example of other fighters who lean back to dodge.

Jeffries transitioned from leaning back to a weave. Mayweather does this all the time.

Exactly! Jeffries is pulling his shots against his useless brother.
It would be ridiculously biased to assess him on this footage.:good

Anyone who sees greatness here .

    Well I'll say no more.

He lasted 5 rounds with one of the greatest fighters to ever live.

And in the sparring clip it's obvious he knows how to throw punches.

It's sparring and training footage people are being too harsh. I wouldn't say I see greatness in the footage but I wouldn't tear him apart either. He does look very fluid, he looks atheltic and he looks far better than he does ten years later. It's an interesting piece of history. If you want Jeffries greatness go by his resume not his footage which unfortunately their isn't much of. He accomplished a ton in limited number of fights.

You say you're learning to box?
    I sincerely wish you ATB.
The next time you pull back in a straight line from a hook , let me know what your trainer says! Alternatively watch Curry v McCallum. Ali could get away with it when he was young because he had great wheels .
Jeffries had 24 fights, most of them against men Arthur Abraham's size ,he had his nose broken 3 times , finished up with a cauliflower ear, and scar tissue like Boris Karloff. Floyd Mayweather has had how many fights? Any marks on him?

    Nothing personal R, I like your posts:good
