Why do you have an agenda here? Young said he ducked out of the ropes to avoid Ali's dirty tactics. The actual quote is quite different "He would hold me at the back of my head and I would duck down to keep the pressure off" Convenient editing misrepresents what was said.
As in: Oh please stop with the retrospective BS. JY did not have it in him to go the extra mile, the chutzpah/b*lls that champions possess. He could have turned several close decision losses into victories,he had the talent ,but not the essential championship desire. He remains a nearly man,and it was entirely of his own choosing.
Ok, one may feel that way but why edit what someone says to conform to a point you are trying to make? It's akin to manufacturing quotes or stories.
Jimmy didn't hold it together for long, but he was an excellent fighter at his best. He beat Foreman and Lyle and to my mind deserved the W against Ali and Norton.
Quote was NOT altered. He may have added to that sentence that I am not aware of certainly. There is no excuse for a challenger trying to leave the ring during a hwt championship fight! None. If you think so please find another sport to follow. Again I lived through that time and was very close to the sport. I was a big fan of Young and liked his mild mannered good natured personality. Cheered for him in his EVERY fight. However look at his record. Take away his wins vs Lyle and Foreman ( huge wins by the way) and you have not much to write home about. I remember being so ****ed at Young where he could have beaten Norton and instead of fighting his heart out he was out hustled. I watched the decision being read and then went out for a very late night run around the lake I was living near in northern NJ. Very disappointing to his fans that he just did not have it within him to rise to the occasion on that very important night. Jimmy Young......ultimate easy going light hitting safety at all cost boxer. Could not break and egg with his punches. To classify him as great in any way is the mark of an unknowlegable fan.
Easy blowhard I got into boxing without your permission, and wont be looking for it when I decide to stop following it. Yeah, I am sure he added to his quote and your more crypic, self serving version is accurate. atsch
Study up and learn the sport. No hwt challenger will ever win the hwt championship by trying to leave the ring a half dozen times while under attack by the champion. Does not matter the reason.
Again fruitcake, pounds sand. The point is that he duck out of the ropes because of pressure. No one is arguing that he made a wise choice.
If Ali had ducked his between the ropes, then you would be the first of the Ali nut-huggers to praise the move as being "creative" and "innovative"....hypocrite.
