Watched this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMy9dFfoJ88 Has any fighter lasted aslong as Mayweather? Just last year vs Pacquiao he showed even at 38 he had tremendous footspeed. Vs Maidana(I) he looked very solid and strong at 37 too and Maidana(II) great ability to move and bounce despite his age. He has kept his power, speed and stamina fairly intact over the years. It seems most fighters are past prime by 33, example, Leonard by 33 had slowed down alot, footspeed and speed of flurries despite still being a great fighter. Pacquiao has been on a visible decline since 32/33 also(Margarito/Mosley) where people complained about the loss of ferocity(or lack of steroids). Roy Jones by 33 fairly past it too, some less than stellar performances vs the likes of Harmon and Glenn Kelly, still had some fast hands but no footspeed by the advanced age of 38(guys like Hanshaw and Trinidad). Is it a testament to just how great his defense is or is it more the weak competition that he's lasted so much longer than most athletically?
Leonard was faded at a relatively young age because of long streaks of inactivity, as well as abusing cocaine with a vengeance, among other things. Pacquiao doesn't have the style for longetivity. Mayweather is a gym rat and a dedicated athlete who stays in shape all the time and his style is fairly economical. But yes, not taking punishment is obviously a good thing when it comes to longetivity.
I think Mayweather's longevity is the product of maniacal preparation and maintaining that level...Props to an ATG in my view.
I'm not sure what you're asking for. What do you mean by athletically? Speed of hands and foot, reflexes?
He's definitely up there. I think Louis gives him a run for his money, but Mayweather did a spectacular job at staying consistently athletic. Though I must say, in his last few fights, he's losing his sharp balance. If he wants to keep his clean record, I think he should retire.
I may have read the question wrong, when it said (longevity athletically) I took that to mean over all sports. That answer is clearly no. But if it's just boxing, he's certainly up there, still don't know what you mean by athletically in this context. But I'd give the edge to Hopkins over Mayweather.
Out of his last 10 fights, 7 were in their 30s with the oldest being 39 years old. A lot of fighters he fought were through wars and obviously past it before they fought him. If he fought the same way he did when 10 years ago he wouldn't have lasted nearly this long. Instead he changed his style for a more conservative counter punching style. This gives fighters problems because he doesn't come forward at all, it is always on them to initiate.
I don't think it will. It'll be the same now ("he ducked *insert fighter here* in his prime") but tenfold in the future.
