The writer's opinion wasn't any better than anyone else's. His claim that 'those who saw the blow never doubted it's stunning power' is a major part of his article and is pure speculation and something he could not have known.

"Former champions Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson and Gene Tunney, as well as contender George Chuvalo all stated that they considered the fight to be a fake."

"While Liston publicly denied taking a dive, Sports Illustrated writer Mark Kram said that years later Liston told him, "That guy [Ali] was crazy. I didn't want anything to do with him. And the Muslims were coming up. Who needed that? So I went down. I wasn't hit." "

    "I wasn't hit"

The "quote" loses all credibility with these three words. Try again Bill.

    Really- It's from Sports Illustrated.
You've said several times it is a credible source.

    Maybe you better try again.

No. It's a quote from Sonny Liston. He was obviously hit so either the following is true:

    1. Liston is lying.
    2. Liston was hit so hard he does not remember being hit.
    3. Liston never said it.

    Which is it Billy?

The leader post may 1 1976

When asked why he ducked his head outside the ropes at least five times Young said:

"To keep the pressure off me. It was part of my strategy"

Liston probably meant he wasn't knocked down.
Ali said the same thing. He told his corner "he laid down".
We have the two principals saying the same thing.

We have you, a multi-named troll saying differently.

    Who should we believe?

He's put in a long day of lying and trolling and juggling names.
He needs to rest up and start again tomorrow.

He probably meant? Now you think it's perfectly fine to interpret, no more than interpret...completely change, Listons own account of this fight? Reread the SI article I originally posted. You know the one you completely denied existed? That's all first hand in person from ringside observations of what occurred that evening. Read and understand it...if you can.

Thats interesting. Do you know when that quote was written?

Here's what Kram says about the fight:

""Many people," Kram reported, "failed to see the short, fast right to the jaw that nailed Liston, and among them were numerous reporters. . . . (There is) no shred of evidence or plausibility to support the suggestion that this was anything but an honest fight.

"The knockout punch itself was thrown with the amazing speed that makes Clay different from any other heavyweight. He leaned away from one of Liston's pawing, ponderous jabs, planted himself solidly and whipped his right arm over Liston's left arm and into the side of Liston's jaw."

Kram also reported that Amos Lincoln, a sparring partner of Liston's, had been "carefully coached" to be "well battered" at Liston's Poland Spring Hotel camp in the days before the fight. For several weeks before that, he had routinely connected with Liston's head with right crosses, according to Kram."

Jim Braddock says it the best:

"I have a feeling that this guy (Ali) is a lot better than any of us gave him credit for."

Tuned in tonight and can't believe this thread is still on page 1.

    Sonny laid down, folks.

Ali would have won the fight convincingly had it been on the up and up, not disputing that.

But it takes two fighters who want to be in there for it to be on the up and up.
