Yeah there were many who would outpoint him but still, guys like him are what fans really want to see.

Saddler was a 14-5 underdog in their first bout, but there were rumors prior to the fight that it was fixed (supposedly in Saddler's favor).

Despite the loss, Pep was a 6-5 favorite the day before their second bout, too, but somehow the bets changed drastically in the last 24 hours to 7-5 in favor of Saddler.

It seems you think there may have been something shady in this series at work. Have you heard or read anything that would lend credence to that line of thinking? What about you Klomp or Burt?

There might well have been but we would normally assume that a late swing in the odds would be towards the guy who ends up winning, due to those punters with the inside info laying down heavy money on the fighter who is fixed as the winner.

That "smart" money was putting their dough on Saddler and his "size" to most likely beat the frailer and past best Willie Pep...

I don't think anything, I'm just re-telling what local reports mentioned in their write-ups the day of the fight and the next day.

Saddler is definitely on the same level as Pep in my eyes. Both are elite ATGs.
Pep had that plane crash, but Saddler missed 2 years in his prime due to being conscipted, while he was world champion and 25 years old.
Also, he probably has something left when he suffered the detached retina and retired.

I was looking to see if you had an opinion one way or the other since you seem well versed on the topic, or perhaps had heard from a source something more.

That's not an era I'm interested in. I have a few reports here and there, but don't know enough to have my own opinion.
