Lil Floyd himself got involved with pro wrestling himself; having a free shot or two at the 'Big Show'. At least the ol' Cowboy was the promoter (thus taking two cuts of the money made) and in theory was allowed to defend himself. [YT]ZlPiuIi0nGA[/YT]
This was more than a mismatch. This was an atg former heavyweight champion slaughtering a non-boxer in a boxing match.
Everyone seems focused on the fact that it's a mismatch, while I'm sitting here watching Dempsey in clear footage amazed
I agree R. Your film clip of a 45 year old Jack Dempsey is the best modern synchronized in regular speed film of him I ever saw... Now visualize him in his heyday, and think what he looked from ringside or from his opponents perspective ? WOW... What a piton like left-hook he displays . There will never be another Jack Dempsey ever
Love that double hook followed by a right cross. Who said hwts old timers could not throw combination?
Uninformed naysayers who think there were no great fighters before television. Damn it are they WRONG...
I can't imagine. The amount of power and explosiveness he has here at 45 years old is insane. A 22 year old Dempsey was probably the scariest thing in the world.
I love how as soon as the fight starts, Dempsey lands all those uppercuts followed by a right overhand bomb. You see him the uppercut combo a lot in older footage, but you don't really feel it's affects until you see him doing here in clear footage.
Dempsey indeed does look sensational. Better than I ever thought he would, before clicking on the link. The end in particular was fantastic. The caveat to this though is that Butterbean too looked awesome when he knocked the stuffing out of those WWE wrestlers in real boxing matches. The level of the opponent does matter ultimately. But as it stands, looking purely at the footage alone, Jack looks the business.
thanks for posting! Enjoyed watching. Say what you want to about Dempsey...but it was always'kill or be killed ' with him...The guy was a scientific killer. Always going for the finish. I think highly of Dempsey.
He was ranked the greatest hwt champion for decades for a reason. Sam Langford stated Dempsey was the greatest hwt he had ever seen for a reason.
I am sorry, but if i can understand this correctly the story is as follow (someone can correct me if i am wrong): Jack Dempsey referreed a tag team match involving Cowboy Lutrell (presumably a bad guy) and the wrestler got upset with it. We then have an out of the retirement match. I dont know the dates, but i presume it was a few weeks later. They then have a fight, which ends with Lutrell desperately trying to grab the ropes while being hit in the face. He is then punched "through the ropes" by Dempsey. We then have Dempsey give an interview which says what a good fighter and tough challenger the wrestler was. I am sorry, but Dempsey really "worked" hard in that one. It may not have been 100 percent scripted but I would be stunned if it didnt have a predetermed ending. It is a shame that he didnt use teh same skills to put Gorilla Monsoon out when he put Muhammed Ali in an airplane spin. Now that would have got the crowd going.
