How long does tyson stay undefeated if he keeps rooney as his trainer?

Who in the world beats him? Does he go to jail?

 

I suspect that he was always going to unravel one way or the other.

 

The same, he was out of control.

 

Or you might as well ask, if Cus hadn't died.

 

Mike didn't want a trainer who he would have to listen to, who would make him go through the rigors of training. So it wouldn't make a difference, really, as he was going to do what he wanted and not what Rooney would have wanted.

It's not like Rooney went on to great success otherwise as a trainer, so I'd say Tyson made him more than vice-versa.

 

I think he had his own issues.

 

It's perfectly possible that he still loses in Tokyo. Tyson was cutting corners in training with Rooney too, and even with Rooney there, Douglas of Tokyo form was always going to be a hard fight.

The difference may have been that with Rooney he would have kept the fundamentals that made him so successful, and probably would have defeated Ruddock more easily.

But then he still gets put away for 3 years and loses what's left of his prime.
So for me, I'm not sure having Rooney there makes a hell of a lot of difference.

I think there could've been a world of difference. But that's the thing, little bits and pieces of the puzzle wouldn't have been missing with Rooney on Tyson's ass. It's the little things that count. Tyson most likely wouldn't have taken 8 months off in between Spinks and Bruno, and Cayton's plan for a Tyson world tour goes on without a hitch.

Tyson most likely still unravels but I think it's a bit later. Again, it depends on Tyson's trust in Cayton as well as Rooney. King gets to him too, eventually.

 

It is not enough to keep Rooney, he would have to submit to Rooney’s will.

 

IMO, Tyson was running out of time for the inevitable losses. His stunning success as a knockout artist hurt him in the long run because there was no plan B. He didn't learn as much as he should have because the KOs were happening. So, even a focused Tyson was heading for losses, but an increasingly out-of-control Tyson without Rooney and Cus derailed sooner. That being said, the relatively limited, one dimensional Tyson, even in shape and disciplined, would have had a huge obstacle to overcome in the person of Douglas. Ditto Holyfield.

Cus D'Amato died during November 1985, only eight months after Mike Tyson's pro debut. After D'Amato's death, Tyson went on to become the world heavyweight champion, to make a number of title defenses and to remain undefeated for four more years.

After one of his co-manager, Jimmy Jacobs, died in early 1988, Tyson went on to split with his other co-manager, Bill Cayton, and his trainer, Kevin Rooney. Moreover, Tyson lost his first bout and his title in a huge upset to James "Buster" Douglas two years after Jacobs' death. In other words, it appears that the impact of Jacobs' death on Tyson's eventual downfall was much greater than the impact of D'Amato's death
