Reading about Eubank wearing Winning on another thread and it got me thinking about the gloves. I've never worn Reyes/Grant/Winning only Rival as I'm a novice so I don't know how each brand feels. Reyes are "punchers gloves" by that is it softer leather around the knuckles or less padding (horse hair I believe)? I've also heard of Grants being described as punchers gloves, and maybe weighted more on the wrist is that right? Winning I've no idea other than all pro's want to train/spar with them but only CEJ actually fights in them. What are the main differences, pro's and con's? Do certain gloves suit a type of style, counter puncher vs pressure fighter etc? Genuinely interested.
Puncher Gloves are horsehair on the knuckles like Reyes Boxer Gloves are foam on the knuckles like Winning Boxer-Puncher Gloves are foam/horsehair on the knuckles like Grants Then quality of leather and wrist padding comes into play which are boxer or puncher attributes depending on how you look at it Round fist shape gloves are for punchers.. so square hand shape gloves are for boxers.. Big pillow gloves are for boxers.. so small gloves are for punchers..
I'd say Reyes are small and round with good wrist padding.. I'd say Grants are square but medium sized with good wrist padding.. And Winning are square but medium sized with good knuckle padding.. I wouldn't call Grants and Winning out and out pillows though..
Also depends what you're trying to do.. a boxer might use puncher gloves.. to add any power that's there.. Maybe a puncher might use a boxer gloves to protect his hands..
Maybe a boxer-puncher might be trying to do something too.. he might utilize punching or boxing or boxer-punching..
I have a pair of winning 10oz fight gloves. The padding is excellent on the knuckles and on the top of the back of the hand. The leather is very soft on these gloves. They are top quality though, best gloves I have ever worn, just feel so comfortable. When your hands are properly wrapped you still get a lot of feedback out of them. Reyes are known as punchers gloves, have only tried a pair of them once but prefer my winnings over them.
Everlast MX are big and round with horsehair/foam.. with good wrist protection.. Just a boxier version of the punchers Reyes glove..
