It's kind of a weird match, but we've seen even more strange fights. Jack Johnson vs middleweights outweighed by 40 lbs, or Jack Sharkey vs Walker, or Tommy Loughran vs Carnera, and 'small' guys gave the bigger opponents really tough, tough fights. So what if middleweight king Garry Greb fought Jack Dempsey for the HW crown? Your opinions guys.
Think he meant what if grab was a heavyweight, Imo Dempsey was the mayweather's of the day. Where Floyd pulled the left shoulder back Dempsey pulled it forward. So the question is how good was grebs defense?
If you put a gun to my head, I would say that Greb would win most of the rounds, then Dempsey would catch him and batter him into submission. Glad that there isn’t a gun at my head!
I tend to agree.... which doesn't mean that Greb didn't earn a title fight more than almost all of Dempsey's challengers.
15 - Dempsey 10 - Ehhhhh Less than that, it would be Greb. That'd be my bet. But really who knows? Each would be the best man the other had faced, I think.
If Dempsey is dictating terms, then it is going to be 15. The only other way is if Greb can get past Willard first.
Frankly, I think that was the only way the fight was going to happen full stop. But a ten-rounder was mooted between the two, when Greb was past it. So it was in the champion's head.
That was kind of the beginning of the end for Dempsey. When he started agreeing to ten rounders, against guys like Greb and Tunney, he was more concerned about lasting fifteen rounds, than finding the optimum strategy for beating these opponents!
I think Dempsey has a better chance in a shorter fight. Greb went the distance even against HWs far more than Dempsey. He was well known for fighting the 20th as fast or faster than the first. As slippery as Greb was as strong and the way he piled up points you dont want to be in the 15th round against him and down on the cards. In 10 rounds or less Dempsey could fight at a fast clip without having to leave much in the tank.
Surely Dempseys best chance is to find a way to put Greb on the canvas for 10 seconds! Or at least make the spectacle so horrible that the crowd start screaming for the officiators to stop the fight!
FAST PACE LED FOR HEAVYWEIGHT BOXERS East Oregonian : E.O. September 03, 1920 On Next to Final Training Day, Dempsey and Miske Go On for Stiff Workouts ; Challenger Lacks Good Partners. BENTON HARBOR, Mich., Sept. 3. (A. P.) With but one more day of hard work remaining in their training grind, Jack Dempsey and Billy Miske Thursday gave their sparring partners a vicious mauling for six rounds. Speed was the watchword and after the workout Dempsey and the challenger declared they boxed at the top of their form. Dempsey, however, got the best workout as he travelled three murderous sessions with Harry Greb, the Pittsburgh lightheavyweight, and another trio with Marty Farrell, Pacific Coast middleweight. Miske feels the lack of capable sparring mates and he was compelled to set the pace himself. Greb Gives real fight The three-round set to between Greb and Dempsey was more in the nature of a real fight instead of a training romp. Dempsey bore into the Pittsburgher with savage rights and lefts and lifted him oft the canvas with one right hander to the ribs. The champion showed the crowd of 1500 that he was in perfect condition. Early in the third round Greb's head accidentally collided with Demp- sey's mouth, cutting the champion's tongue so severely that he spit blood the remainder of the round.
Harry Greb was my favorite alltime great fighter. As I posted about 5 years ago in an old boxing magazine probably Ring Mag from the 1930s, I read an article written by a popular old time boxing scribe, in which he interviewed Harry Greb after he retired, who told this writer this quote "after five rounds or so Dempsey would have killed me", unquote. This article I read but I have forgotten the name of the boxing columnist, but read it I DID, for what it's worth...
