The only thing worse than fighting a middleweight would be fighting everyone the middleweight had already beaten.
Greb hitting Firpo would have been like ping pong ***** hitting a bear and the fight is one single right hand from ending, only has to land once, the man was so much bigger but if Greb avoids the big shot he would probably win on points. As for Dempsey, he could have really gone for the kill if he wanted to, he could have asked for a few more rounds if he felt he had to prove it but he would have looked like just a thug if he went full power on him. I have always been of the mind that a good big man always beats a good little man and it's been proven like a hundred times out of 101. It has been proven even in smaller weight classes... a fact of physics I suppose. When a good small man beats a good big man then usually the big man wasn't actually that good, he has been exposed like John Ruiz was. As for Brennan, he was KO'd into next week by Firpo.
Cool story, bro. Unfortunately, when a great little man meets a middling big man, results can vary...
I agree he is rather middling but he did score some good wins, nothing too much to get excited about though but for a man the size of Greb he's very dangerous.
I have to favor Dempsey. Dempsey’s legs were fast enough to keep the battle in close quarters and Greb’s style was to mix it up. I don’t see that as the best style to beat Dempsey in the 1918-1923 range. Dempsey was stopping guys like Levinsky, Miske, Brennan, and walking through Carpentier like a hot knife through butter. Greb was all risk and no reward for Dempsey. Jack’s handlers may have avoided optimum risk but I’m still of the opinion that had the fight occurred - Dempsey’s artillery along with his fast enough speed to be competitive with Greb’s speed would see him eventually hurt Greb and either knock him out or make him clam up like Gibbons did.
Those that somehow favor Greb point to their sparring sessions ignoring they wore “pillow” gloves 14-16 oz which effectively protected the middleweight from Dempseys devastating blows. To quote a writer from that time who discussed “THE GREB PROBLEM” (that Greb was not winning in spectacular fashion at heavyweight to gain public interest). “To believe Greb would stand any chance vs the hard punching champion is the next thing to being ridiculous”.
You think that Jess had the will to train at all, to sacrifice for boxing in order to achieve the proper physical form?
