    Highly unlikley I would say.

Many fighters would hav made a better fist of it than he did, but it would be almost impossible to fight that schedule without picking up a loss.

I think that if anybody was likely to get through Sharkey’s resume undefeated, then we would have a lot more undefeated lineal champions!

I think this is a reasonable position. Sharkeys resume included, but was not limited to Wills, Godfrey, Dempsey, Schmeling x2, Carnera x2 and Joe Louis, over a 12 year period. Some of these men might not have been at their best, but they were still a handful.

    It’s not just that either.

He was thrown to the wolves pretty much from his professional debut, and he was thrown back to them when he was on the slide.

Joe Louis for your last professional fight anyone?

For that to happen, the Louis of the Marciano fight, would have to beat the Louis of the Sharkey fight.

Ali could. 12 years into his pro career would've been 1972. Joe Louis (coming off a loss to Schmeling) vs. Ali in 1972 ... Ali could take him.

The question mark may have been could he beat Jack Dempsey? Three years into his career, the Doug Jones/Henry Cooper version of Cassius Clay vs. the Jack Dempsey between losses to Tunney?

Dempsey wasn't Dempsey anymore. But Clay wasn't Ali yet, either.

That fight might be more dangerous than the 1972 Ali vs. Joe Louis.

Yes but 55 fights into his career would be 1976.

This means that if he is going to take the same opponents over a 12 year span, he has to fight to a much tighter schedule.

You can't get something for nothing here.

No. Jack Sharkey fought 55 fights in 12 years.

If Ali fought those 55 fights over 12 years, I'm sure he could handle the schedule. Ali had more than 41 fights by the end of 1972 ... after missing nearly four years. He'd have had 55 fights himself if he only boxed three or four times in the years he was off.

OK, tell me how you are calculating this, and I will show you the flashpoints that you are overlooking.

So are we saying that Ali fights the same 55 opponents, over a twelve year period, starting from the date of his professional deubt?

If you prefer we can substitute his first 55 fights, for Sharkey’s first 55, but keep the dates as they are on his resume.

    Yes.

What if Muhammad Ali fought Jack Sharkey's resume - those same 55 fights Sharkey fought over 12 years.

I didn't think it was a very complicated question.
