apparently it was over 100 million back in 2000. 70 million in 2008. Now fallen to 30 million. they also announced more ppv on HBO. Boxings slow death continues. Will HBO even televize much boxing in 2026 other than a handful of fights?
They need to move over to Showtime. Sadly, Espinoza went in ***** deep with Gaymon. Uh, Showtime could've done so well had they not went in with Gaymon. There ratings were through the roof when GBP was setting up all the matches. You know, before Oscar found out his roster wasn't even working for him.
HBO is the premier boxing network. A 70 percent budget reduction is not a good direction. I watch boxing not HBO doush
HBO has the experience and knows what they're doing. Their strategy is to drive ppv to make up for the budget difference. If it fails, then they'll readjust. Remember that it's a free market. So if be demamd is here and HBO can't take advantage, then either Sho picks up whatever HBO can't handle or other networks will.
Worth remembering that HBO doesn't own nearly as much of the talent as they did back in 2000. It might not be a real terms cut.
The promoter can set up the PPV independently like the UFC does. Their PPV's are not backed by a network. Arum did that with the Cotto vs Malinaggi fight too. Was Mosley vs Mayorga backed by a network?:huh
Breakeven is the new profit. They're going to put more fringe fights (that would've been on regular HBO 10 years ago) on PPV to subsidize their own budget. So long as they run at breakeven, or close to it, the network is saving millions by letting the fans cover their portion of the purse.
:think Now the reality is Fighters will really need those fanboys to come thru on their fandom. Their livelihood will depend on it. Now that 97k-150,000 ain't looking so bad anymore.:smoke
Breakeven is the new profit until HBO decides to REPLACE the saturday night slots with other more profitable programs.
I don't know if this is a good thing or bad. one has to wonder if the marriage between HBO and boxing isn't causation for boxing's decline over the years. Hard to tell if it's coincidence or not. Although the sport did experience a renaissance in the early 2000's while HBO was firmly at the top. Anyway, I'd say HBO's budget has more to do with the lack of superstars in the sport than anything else. I'd also guess HBO isn't divorcing our sport anytime soon. Whether we like it or not, they are basically the face of Boxing.
Kovalev fight should sell a lot. SOB Ward did not look so good against Barrera, Kovalev would have easily knocked Barrera out cold, easy to hit, his punches were way to slow and wide, but SOB could not hurt him. Kovalev has straight short punches, good at infighting, short range, mid-range and long range.................Kovalev is not Barrera, he is in another class...................
Its because there are no exciting champions from the USA. Guys like Broner, Ward or Wilder are not getting any ratings.
