He's got a point. While Hopkins and Toney are elite fighter they're a different style.

Hearns is a better technical fighter than Jones. Jones would get outboxed and then finished.

I can't imagine Jones really landing anything on Hearns. Tommy is too fast and too skilled.

 

Why would Roy have had an issue landing on Tommy?

Look at his unorthodox variation of shots, his reach, coupled with otherworldly speed, with genuine one punch knockout power in either hand.

You're telling me that Roy couldn't have taken him out, yet Ray, Marvin and Barkley did?

It has to do with styles IMO. Hearns was vulnerable to the caveman style of fighting. The F everything and just go for it bullrushing style. Hagler and Barkley just jumped him. And I don't think Jones presents those same challenges stylistically.

Ray was actually getting outboxed by Hearns until Tommy ran out of gas and got caught. Modern boxing is 12 rounds though.

I think Hearns stylistically has the edge over Jones. First Jones usually enjoyed an otherworldly speed advantage. While he's faster than Tommy it wouldn't be that much of a speed difference. And Tommy would certainly be the fastest fighter Jones had seen. Jones would't outclass him athletically anywhere near to the extent he did with Toney and Hopkins.

In addition, Hearns is too solid technically and too gifted athletically to succumb to the traps and unorthodox of Jones Jr. Where Hopkins and Toney were just too slow and unathletic to respond.

I see Hearns-Jones being like the rich man's version of Barrera Hamed. Where the unorthodox fighter finds a guy who's too gifted athletically and too skilled. And he gets picked apart and made to look sloppy against a well schooled boxer-puncher.

 

Don't think I agree with Eubank as Best MW ever, but he clearly has one of the best chins of all time.:deal
