Calzaghe would have beaten any of the past Middleweight greats.

Calzaghe wouldn't have even beaten Peter Manfredo if the fight was in Providence

Middleweight greats? Come on. I could see even a Hurricane Carter landing on the button and putting his lights out.

Calzaghe has a hell of a chin but let's rein up short of pretending he was ever invincible. He was hurt by Reid, past-it Eubank & Brewer and down against Byron Mitchell. He was also dropped early by very old men in his last two bouts (even if he was getting up there himself and fighting seven pounds north of his prime weight)

SMW is young enough that you can say he beats nearly anyone that has campaigned there (short of probably Jones, Toney and maybe Ward) but there are scores of MW contenders, let alone champions, throughout history against whom you'd be foolish to make Joe a prohibitive favorite.

Shouldn't this be in the "Classic" forum as it's comparing retired fighters?

joe lacked the skills to go with the greats, evident in him needing to wait for old man bhop to gass before catching up and scrayping a narrow win.

its kinda obvious why he waited 11 years for his first elite opponent to be carrying an injury before he dared face him, never mind actual greats.

Mickey Walker would be the type of guy that would enjoy a trip up to MW/Super MW just to pound out Calzaghe. (Walker defeated hvys).

With his activity and chin it will always be very hard to beat him. A man who throws 100 punches a round for 12 rounds and has a solid beard is a stylistic might are for anyone.

However his career did highlight a certain weakness of his and that is even with his perpetual movement, he can be timed. Reid, Eubank, Hopkins, Jones, Mitchell and Kessler all had patches of success at times and showed that he was somewhat predictable in his movement and punch selection.

An aggressive boxer will have to be able to walk through him and given the size disadvantage that will prove hard. The likes of Benn, Ketchel, Jackson, G-Man etc will really struggle here imo.

A defensive master will struggle because they will likely be out landed which will make almost every fight close on the cards.

But someone who can time him and make him pay, someone like that can certainly beat him.

My top 15 MW list is the following, along with how I see Calzaghe faring:

    Robinson - L
    Hagler - L
    Monzon - L
    Jones Jr - L
    Gibbons - W
    Hopkins - L
    Burley - W
    Tiger - L
    Walker - W
    Toney - L
    McCallum - W
    Apostoli - W
    Steele - W
    Nunn - L
    LaMotta - W

So I see him going 7-8 against my top 15 MW list.

It wouldn't surprise me if he beat quite a few of them, since Calzaghe was a career light-heavyweight.
