Eubank and Benn are both overrated now. They were probably UNDERrated ( or somewhat overlooked) by the international (American) boxing press at one time in their careers, or at least their fights -w hich were massive here - didn't get much mention in the American magazines at the time. The WBO titles that Eubank held were generally considered second-rate titles at the time, outside of the UK. The super-middle division was still relatively new. Eubank had some really poor challengers in the WBO ratings to pick from, and didn't perform so well against some really bad ones. But nowadays they've become overrated. One of the worst myths is that Steve Collins came along and got Chris Eubank when he was "past prime". In fact, Collins was a contemporary of Eubank's who had established himself in America and on the world stage by fighting some of the best world middleweights (McCallum, Reggie Johnson, going the distance but losing to both) and had faced Sumbu Kalambay too. During that same period Eubank's best win was against Watson, who had done less well against McCallum than Collins had. Eubank didn't fight the top fighters in the world, not at 160 or even at 168.
Eubank was a great fighter on his night and one of the toughest men to ever step in a ring but he was inconsistent (even before the Watson tragedy i.e. Sherry), and got a couple of gift decisions in his career, Benn II and Schommer were outright disgraceful he clearly lost both of those fights.
Eubank was good against boxers that went at him in straight lines with little thought. ie.Benn 1 and Wharton for example. But when a boxer gave a bit of movement and thought to their work Eubank did not look elite. A good world class boxer but not great.
That's the most ridiculous statement I've seen on here for a while. Your seriously saying Eubank had nothing to do with them being great fights. Come on !!!!
He was also never the same after Watson. He was holding back something from then on... A true world class fighter.
he wasn't fast, but deadly sneaky. and incredibly tough, the best chin of the british SMWs. Still a top three british SMW to this day.
He was by far the best super-middleweight from the time he beat Watson until James Toney (best lb4lb, possibly ever) entered the division with that breathtaking display against Barkley. Herol Graham kept losing. He hung around for decades waiting for title shots. Eubank was the opposite - straight in there, grabbing opportunities. Why give Herol a shot when nobody else would? He'd of stood anyone on their head - he stood MCCALLUM (one of the most skilled ever of any weight) on his head for six rounds.
Exactly he had very good skills and awesome chin. If only he had a joe C engine he would of been an absolute beast
Nigel and Chris had WAAAAY more miles on their body when they met Steve. That counts for a lot. Those guys were in wars that Steve never was.
[YT]eKI41c26keo[/YT] Those quadruple left hooks of Wharton to head and body! He should've won a world title. He was around at the wrong time!
