For a short period of time....it was going to be Wilfred moving up and taking on Hagler. How long could have "El Radar" stayed in there with the Marvelous One????
Probably, anywhere from 8 to 10 rounds, tops.Hagler would eventually get to Wilfred, and stop him good.
Assuming Benitez could handle the move up without losing anything, I`d say Hagler on points... the Benitez that fought Hearns & Duran at 154 would cause Hagler a bit of difficulty, I just don`t see him being able to do enough offensively without feeling the force of Hagler`s natural size & strength. Hagler W15 Benitez
Hagler by convincing decision. 'El Radar' would start well, making Hagler look slow, but would fade from the middle stages onwards.
Ok, i'll go one even better than that. Benitez, or "El Radar", the "Bible of Boxing" rests comfortably on the ropes and "allows" Hagler to waste all his energy trying to hit his deceivingly hittable head, and punches himself out by the elventh while skillfully countering an increasingly frustrated Hagler. By round 13, Hagler has clearly punched himself out and now desperately trying to find a win. Benitez on the other hand, fully confident, and clearly in command, closes the show with multiple flurries to steal the late rounds. Benitez by comfortable 15 round decision
Had Benitez beaten Hamsho he would have fought Hagler and gotten stopped. Benitez was shot at that point. Had they fought about the time of the Hope Id give Benitez a shot at winning.
that fite just showed how Wilfred would founder against better fighters (his losses were all lopsided) lopsided loss to leonard, lopsided loss to Hearns, lopsided loss to Hamsho WHEN they fought never mattered and what's WB going to use to beat MH, his head movement?
If Benitez fought Hagler when he fought Duran and Hearns in 1982 I think could beat Hagler. When he moved up and fought Hamsho that hurt his concentration and confidence. Benitez had a style which could frustrate Hagler, although Marvin was strong. Too bad it didn't happen. It would have completed the round robin since Hagler is the only one whom Benitez did not fight of the fab 4.
Not even close,,,,,,,and it doesn't matter what year 1980/1981/1982/1983/1984. This bout would be a 'blow-out',,,,,,,, Marvin in the 'southpaw stance' would land one of those hard right-hands, and Wilfred who had a 'sometimes suspect chin' would go down. The 'Wunderkind' would have to perform 'miracles' just to last through '3' rounds. Marvin by a 'brutal' Knock-Out (KO 4)..........see; Wilford Scypion
Benetiz was at or near the end of his career as a world class boxer, plus he was something of an undracheiver in my opinion. I think Hagler would have won by late round stoppage.
I think Benitez 1982 when he fought Duran and Hearns could have almost decisioned Hagler. he had the style and he was Hagler height if not a little taller. Hagler would have overrated him moving up from 154 like he did guys moving up and he might have been caught off guard and had to eek out a win. The Benitez of 1984 and past would lose by knockout to Hagler.
Scypion and Benitez were both Professional Prizefighters. That is where the similarities end. I think Benitez would get in Hagler's head a bit just as Duran and Leonard did. Ultimately I think Hagler would overcome for a late stoppage or a decision.
Hagler was surprising. He did better if the guy was seen as a threat. Then he seemed to work himself into a better place and have a stronger tactic. Benitez would be a guy he would overrate and find himself in a scorecard dilemma.
