The best version of heavyweight Gibbons versus the best version of Frank Bruno. 15 rounds with Arturo Mercante as ref.

    Who takes this and how?

Does Tommy have the science and durability to take Big Frank into deep waters? Does Frank have the jab to undo Tommy? Can Tommy's stout punch freeze Bruno? What gives?

I suspect that Bruno would be up on the score cards, then he would gas, and Gibbons would take him out late.

How many HW fighters did Gibbons stop late?

Bruno's too big for him, but give Gibbons a large ring and plenty of rounds to operate and he could make it interesting, and possibly upset Bruno.

Gibbons was only stopped once in 60 fights, and that was by a relentless Gene Tunney later in the match. There is footage, watch it. You'll think differently of Tunney. He also went the distance with Dempsey.

This suggests Gibbons had the durability that projects to heavyweight. Bruno was not known for stamina or speed.

85/15 or Bruno to win a 12 round match.
70/30 for Bruno to win a 15 round match.

I think that past a certain point, you prety much just waited for Bruno to fall over.

How many people stopped Gibbons in the first round?

How many stopped him in any round?

If he could go 15rds with Dempsey when he was slightly past prime he could duplicate that against Bruno.

Have you forgotten how Bruno used to routinely disappoint us?

The man is the sole reason I'm a boxing fan . 5th time lucky from my memory.

Imagine how gutted I was when I learnt boxing history and realised he was never really a HW champion at all :-(

The idea seems to have crystalized since then that he was some sort of superheavyweight monster.

The perception back then was that he lost whenever he stepped up, and should not be a confidently favoured over any strong heavyweight contender.

My hunch is that they were right back then.

Whilst I agree, Gibbons is a LHW.
