True, but he wasn't a natural heavyweight. He won the title in spite of being undersized. Against an actual HW threat he was destroyed.

Spinks beat Holmes twice, Tangsted and ****ey. He was a heavyweight for 3 years.

I agree. Two unbeaten heavyweight champions with so much more than sport being attached to it at a time when he Heavyweight Championship still carried maximum prestige.

Exactly. Spinks was no threat to Tyson at all. Tyson knew it and doesn't even regard that win as that great.

How else could Tyson become champ?

But Tyson had no other way of winning the HW championship.

Spinks wasn't ever a great HW, and wasn't ever viewed as a great HW.

Spinks only claim to fame at Heavy was beating a way past prime (you could almost say shot compared to what he once was) Holmes. The rematch tells me that beside being way past prime Holmes was also overconfident and underprepared in the first fight. Holmes came back and undeniably got the better of the rematch imo.

It was a great achievement winning the first fight given all the intangibles, absolutely. The rematch showed however imo that quite a few things fell into place for Spinks that first night. Given Holmes had not been fighting upper tier challengers for a couple of years he may well have been even further gone than we realise.

Spinks was the hwt champion. Tyson did not and could not win the championship UNLESS he beat Spinks.

All one has to do is what the run up to the fight. Spinks clearly looked scared before the fight started, never warmed up and obviously didn't want to be there. Contrast that to Tyson who had his shirt of and was moving around like a caged Tiger.

This fight was over before it even began.
