Which 175ers in history would you comfortably favour over Sergey Kovalev?

Which of his opponents were just as murderous punchers as Kovalev?

The underlined is a piece of glib nonsense.
Going into the Foster fight Rondon was a reigning champion, and was unbeaten in 20 fights over the last 3 years. His career took a nose dive because he began taking on the heavyweights men such as Lyle,Shavers,Urtain,Roman, and Bobick.
He went the distance with punchers Urtain, and Shavers.

In his prime, Saad could be hurt on occasion, but his recuperative powers were otherworldly.

Marvin Johnson could punch and Saad took all he could dish out in two fights and was never visably staggered.

Eddie Gregory had power, and he took that.

I think a good question would be would Korolev be able to take Saad's punch, which was better than anything he has faced so far.

Hopkins is retired and he's the only name Sergey has from the top 10. Take Hop out and he has nobody.

You can't put this mans name along side any greats. Even recent guys like DM and Zolt have a higher standing as of now.

Realistically he should have fought Adonis twice . . But instead we got Pascal twice. Thats a testament to the woeful state the sport is in right now.

That's my take on him, too. He looks the part, but I am not sure about the quality of his opposition. The same applies to GGG, but I am a bit more convinced about him.

Kovalev has only come into his own lately.

He has Campillo, Cleverly, Hopkins and Pascal. He's more proven than Triple G for my money.

But right now he's a bit unproven as to where his limit is.

If he beats Ward and Stevenson there's nothing to criticise really.

Stevenson has Dawson , Fonfara , Cloud, Bellew and Bika. There's an argument for Adonis having a better resume than Kovalev.

I'm not criticising him ,just trying to put him into perspective.
If he beats those named we will certainly know more about him.

    Get your stamp ready

(assuming the Dirrell/Bute/Golovkin ducker is bold enough to face the challenge)

Hopkins before the age of 45 would give him problems,

    So would pitty pat Calzaghe

So would Jones 1997, Kov would edge him in power but Jones would be too quick to ever get hit plis Jones packed plenty of power of his own

My opinion of Kovelof might improve if he impresses against Ward but right now his biggest claim to fame is decisioning a 50 year old part time broadcaster in Hopkins and having a tougher than expected go around with Jean Pascal of all people

Im not ready to build the man a statue just yet...although i do find him entertaining to watch, but im sorry he was eating more punches than he should have against Pascal, can you imagine what a prime Antonio Tarver or Roy Jones or even Calzaghe would do to him????
