Has the new, exciting heavyweight division already jumped the shark?

After the Fury upset, it looked like a whole new, exciting, wide open heavyweight division with a number of good prospects and contenders. Now, after a few fights, it already seems to be winding down. Let's examine some of the players.

Fury
Fury won virtually every round in beating Klitschko, which should have retired a great but faded camp. But Wlad demanded his rematch, which will take place in July. Already in the eight months between, Fury has dropped a belt, ballooned up, and openly talked about how he doesn't want to fight anymore and doesn't care about his legacy. Fury could easily be an ATG, but he just doesn't seem to want it.

Klitschko
40 years old and it shows. Even if he wins the rematch, where can he go from here?

Martin
Martin pulled out a great but controversial win against Glazkov which left more questions than answers. Even if he had lost to Joshua in impressive fashion, it might have validated some things about him. Instead, he was steamrolled. Since he was shootting off his mouth about being a god and all of that beforehand, even his marketablilty has suffered.

Joshua
His camp has openly admitted that he is not yet ready for Fury after the Whyte fight. Openly admitted it. And yet, he is some sort of world champ? I sense another Wilder situation in which he will hold a title hostage fighting cripples and train hobo's for a couple of years. Speaking of which...

Wilder
We have been up and down about this guy. He is a fraud and that is all. He has defended only against guys who have no business being anywhere near a world title, and it is because he sucks. Much like Joshua, his handlers admited that he needed more development fights after lifting a "title" from a guy who was beaten by Demetrice King. Unfortunately, he seems to have set a precedent that will drag boxing down further: untalented prospects as "world champions."

Povetkin
I have no doubt he will beat Wilder (and am still looking for a lifetime ban bet against one of Wilder's big mouth fans) but at 38 years old, where does he go from there?

Ortiz
People thinking he is going to be the next big thing are in for a shock. He is AT LEAST 36 years old, weighed in at a career high VS Thompson, and has had a long long career with 350 amatuer fights and steroid abuse. His pro career will not be a long one as he gets older, fatter, and more worn down. A couple of good fights in him.

Brown
Even hough he is 36 himself and untalented, he seemed like he would be good for a few fun, action fights--but then he got busted for having illegal substances in his system. But the time he sorts it out he will be finished.

Chagaev
Done. His prime was in the amatuers

Haye
Coming off an alleged career threatening injury and figthing at a higher weight, I don't expect much.

Ibeabucchi
Not that he would have come back and set the world on fire anyway, but apparently he is already back in jail.

Helenius
It is now clear that he is done.

Pulev
Fight someone for Chrsit's sake. And no, Chisora is not the guy

Probably not that good without steroids.

Somebody has to come out on top, but in the end, it looks like we are not going to have it as good as we expected.

 

I am sorry that at this point I can't, as they are not all recent. I am sure others have the articles at their fingertips though. He said that nothing that he ever does is going to equal unseating Wlad, and that he doesn't care about his legacy. I hope he is just playing possum, but...

The problem with Wilder, Joshua and Martin is that they have now established that guys who have no business yet contending are going to be acceptable as champs. They will continue to hold the division back by fighting neverending streams of bums. Whether it is motivated by cowardice or not is not really relelvant.
