And which Providence Circuit tomato can did Marciano fight in his 10th fight? Bob Jefferson, 3-2, 172 pounds... would go on to a sterling record of 4-10, having never scored a KO and himself being KO'd 7 times. Isn't boxrec fun?

 

For me these woeful early records are more of a testament to Rocky than anything else.

For someone to go from those types of opponents to suddenly mixing it with the elite, it's a great testament.

Martin Murray was quite similar as was Gavin Rees, both came from nowhere to top level fighters, but obvs Rocky and Foreman went a step further than those two.

And look, I'm not the one talking bad about great boxers that got knocked down in their career. Every great boxer gets knocked down. It happens to the best.

So you can't say getting knocked down by Moore and Walcott is bad, but getting knocked down by Banks is not.

You can't vindicate Ali and then trash Marciano for the same thing.

Is it really being held against him? Kovalev is a great puncher and is unorthodox as hell, it's not far fetched at all that Kovalev could hurt him and knock him down possibly. That's all I was saying.

I make Marciano the favorite to outwork and stop Kovalev late in the fight but it's far more competitive than some of you are making it out to be. Kovalev has the style to give Rocky fits as he has a very good jab, good accuracy and pretty good hand speed.

 

It's definitely a fair point in relation to the knockdowns.

I think this would be a tough win for Rocky. He'd be in there with an iron man.

 

Walcott floored Louis 3 times in 2 fights,hardly a feat, Louis was past it and had been on the deck several times in fights.

Sonny Banks never knocked down another legend because he never fought one,that doesn't mean he was incapable of it!
Of his 18 wins only 4 were by dec he stopped the 14 others! The man was dead at 24, who knows whom he might have dropped had his career been longer? Silly comparison.

Kovalev is as straight forward as you get - literally.

Jab , jab jab , straight. Jab jab followed by a round house. He over extends a lot , leaving himself hitable. Pascal got him when he went for him. The long southie lead power hand of Stevenson would be a serious issue for him if he had the gonads to actually face him.

I see a Rex Layne type KO for Rocky here. Total mismatch.

 

Ali was in his prime when Frazier beat him and dropped him.

I pick Marciano to ko Kovalev, he is far more proven at top level ,where Kovalev has barely scratched the surface . I would pick Walcott,Charles, and Moore to beat Kovalev too, possibly all by ko..
