Don Mogard was the first man to go the route with Rocky he was a light hitter but a good boxer,it was a U Dec.I suppose the only controversial win Marciano had on his way up was against Lastarza.
    "A crowd of 13,658 paid $53,733. LaStarza (37-0) received approximately $13,000, and Marciano (25-0) got about $8,000.
The Associated Press reported: "Rocky, a short-armed, slope-shouldered battler won the fight with a sensational punching display in the fourth round when he floored LaStarza. A low blow In the eighth round cost the free swinging Rocky a clear-cut triumph. He belted handsome Rollie all over the lot in the frame and hurt him with another one of his vicious rights to the jaw."
Jessie Abramson of the New York Daily Herald called the decision "paper thin and exceedingly odd." According to newspaper reports, it was condemned around ringside as a miscarriage of justice. "

Most fighters have another they can't do much with. Lowry had lost his last 7 fights when he took Rocky the distance to a disputed result. Rocky later said he thought Lowry would always have gone the distance with him.Yet Rusty Payne had ko'd him prior to the 1st Marciano fight in a fight in which Lowry showed little resistance.

1949-04-04 : Ted Lowry 176½ lbs lost to Rusty Payne 180½ lbs by KO at 2:58 in round 7 of 10

"Lowry offered very little offense in the bout, as he grabbed, clinched, and landed lightly to Payne's body. Lowry decided to open up in the 7th round, and landed a right cross on Payne. While this blow was landing, Payned landed a left hook to the chin that dropped Lowry hard. Lowry was counted out as he was attempting to beat the ten-count ."

Sometimes we forget fighters are only human ,and subject to off days/nights like anyone else.

Marciano may have lost a close decision in the Lowry fight, but keep in mind he only had 12 amateur fights, and had only been a pro for about 3 years when it happened.

Lowry was a true veteran with 100+ fights under his belt. He had a defensive style, and the fight was just 10 rounds.

Rocky hit his prime shortly before the Joe Louis fight

It's doubtfull Korolev could beat the best 175 lb guys, now we have him pitted against a solid, undefeated heavyweight champ. who is bigger and stronger.

I feel there is a little unfounded hyperbole by some Korolev supporters. Let's see what he can do against the best 175 lb guys of his own era, before we judge him against the historical greats and near greats.

I agree Kovalev is an unproven fighter at the moment. In the light of some claiming he beats atg 175pounders I was curious as to how posters assessed him.
I 've said my pick is Marciano and by ko, so my stall is laid out.

ps. I shouldn't be at all surprised if Stevenson ko's him , should they ever meet.

Seems like virtually everyone here acknowledges that Kovalev would be the underdog and would most likely lose though. I find the kneejerk "Marciano would murder him inside of 3 rounds" hyperbole to be the most misguided, considering that several smaller, lesser fighters than Kovalev went many rounds with Marciano.

After Golovkin lures Alvarez into the ring, he can fight Billy Sanders next. Once the division will be cleaned out, then he moves up to 168 and takes a title. I could see him winning one at 175 as well.

GGG actually had great counter punching skills in the amateurs, he hasn't needed to use them much in the pros.

GGG vs Kovalev would be one heck of a fight.

Lowry had 120 fights at that time but he had won only 62 of them, he was a journeyman who had found his level.
From May1948 until October 1949 ,when he fought Marciano, he had 22 fights, he won only 4 of them, and only 2 of his last 7 before facing Marciano.
Louis was facing contenders and ex champs in his second year as a pro.
Sharkey was also fighting good men in his second year.

Thank you for this information man, great stuff!

And yes, so true. These guys are only human. Which is why I've always respected the great fighters for pulling away from the luck of it all, and coming away with great results more often than not.

I'm not sure if Kovalev is smaller than Marciano. He has great size and strength for light heavy. He lacks in other areas.

Kovalev would knock his block off in less than 5. It would be a mismatch.

And on your first point, I'm not sure Golovkin's team has the muscle to lure Canelo or Saunders into the ring any time soon. I'd be surprised if either fight happened this year.
