With yesterday's news of Kovalev facing Chilemba in Russia how famous is the krusher in his homeland?
Every time I mention Kovalev, people tell me they have never heard of him. Even casual boxing fans who watch the heavyweights don't know who Kovalev and Golovkin are.
Yep! Sure, every hardcore box fan in Russia knows Kovalev. He was an outstanding amateur after all. I am not russian based and I stem from Belarus. Therefore I dont dare to say 100% what russian sport fans think about him. As far as I could understand by reading russian websites, watching russian tv or listening to russian friends and aquaintances he doesnt seem to be that known or popular among Russia's casual sport fans.Povetkin, for sure, plays in a different league in terms of popularity. I guess in Belarus the vast mayority of the male population has never heard of Kovalev's name(and people there watch russian tv,read russian newspaper and mags, and have close ties with Russia). The same goes for Golovkin. Golovkin is Kazahk, one poster pointed out. Doesnt really matter! We were all kind of **** sovieticus and still feel close bonds and ties between our nations and people. A native russian speaking fighter,an exceptional, from Kazahkstan surely gets attention and makes some noise in other former soviet republics,too,if....yes.if his sport is a popular one..........:---( Pro boxing cant be really called the most popular sport there in the former states of the old soviet union. For example ice hockey is the nr.1 sport in Belars. No doubt about it! Sure, the same rules cant be applied to the big boys. The Klitschkos are superstars in the Ukraine, and almost every child knows their names in Belarus, too.
