I have always maintained that the earlier fights between Greb and Tunney were between a prime Greb and a raw inexperienced and a long way from prime Tunney but when Tunney was reaching or had reached prime he was a better fighter with better weapons than Harry Greb. Am I being hard on Greb or trying to diminish his legacy as a great fighter ? NO, but I am saying he wasn't the best to ever live... the real deal that Tunney became certainly was too big and too good for Greb and yet when he beat Dempsey I maintain Jack was well past it and ripe for destruction..... Can Greb beat Dempsey on equal terms ? NOPE.

Here is a great article/fight report on the fight in early '24... the date of article is 2/2/1924. enjoy

Greg, a fine post. But when you compare Gene Tunney with Harry Greb you forget one important factor. Gene Tunney was a strong ligtheavyweight who ALWAYS outweighed the smaller middleweight Harry Greb by about 12-15 pounds in their bouts. A great handicap for any MW to give to a 6ft1" 175 pound Gene Tunney.Wouldn't you agree. And for Harry Greb to about split their 5 bout series with the much larger Gene Tunney is remarkable in itself...
P.S. Greg how would you think Gene Tunney would have fared if Harry Greb fought at 175 pounds and he at about 160 pounds ?
That is why Harry Greb is esteemed so highly as a P4P fighter. His ability to tackle great fighters of much higher weight time and again...
What other great MW in history fought so many larger and stronger HOFers time and again with great success ? cheers...

Unfortunately for your argument, that article, and that web page that looks like a four year old pieced it together Greb defeated Tunney later that year in Cleveland. So goes the theory that Tunney suddenly outgrew him, or figured him out, or whatever the flavor of the month is for you, Dempsey 1234, and Perry... or is it just you... I didn't think alts were allowed LOL:D

That's pretty silly, the guy who wrote the article has his name at the top of the article, clearly he was not 4 years old. And show me where Greb beat Tunney later that year..... where is that loss recorded ?... you using some other newspaper for that I guess yet here is a newspaper article of the day and because you don't like the content you sneer at it, as usual you pick and choose according to your agenda. Greb couldn't have hurt Tunney with those light taps Greb gave out.

You are the alt Stephen.... Dempsey1234 trains and manages good fighters so despite any claims you make, he knows oodles about the sport, he is actually involved in it and could teach you how to throw punches.... not that you probably ever used your fists. As for Perry he is unknowable. He does not chat so yeah a mystery but still great poster. Anyway here is my impression of your post... :dead:dead:dead:dead:dead:dead:dead

I hear from good authority that the website will include Greb friendly articles. The owner tells me that all articles posted with not contain opinion from the owner, just articles re-produced verbatim.

Gene TUNNEY vs Harry GREB IV
    Lewiston Evening Journal 18/Sept/1924

TUNNEY HOLD’S A DRAW WITH SHADE OVER GREB

    CLEVELAND, Sept, 18

Gene Tunney, American Light-Heavyweight Champion today
Holds a draw with possible shade over Harry Greb, world’s
Middleweight champion as a result of their 10 round no-decision
Contest decided in the open air arena here last night.

Matt Hinkle, referee of the contest, said that if he had been
Permitted to give a decision he would have declared the contest
a draw, The newspaper experts, however, even those from
Pittsburgh were of the opinion that Tunney had the shade,

Tunney did most of his fighting at close range, while Greb
Swung his punches from all angles, MISSING FREQUENTLY.
Tunney ducking under Greb’s frequent leads, battered the
Middleweight title holder’s body with JOLTING RIGHTS
    And LEFTS.

The tenth round was the most furious of the fight, Greb sailed
Into Tunney at the start, swinging his arms like flails, but
Tunney came back and won the round with a furious attack
That was still in progress when the bell rang. He caught
Greb with a left hook that all but KNOCKED HIM TO THE
    CANVAS.

Take a look at a map and see exactly where Lewiston is in relation to Cleveland then get back to me. i.e. Lewiston papers weren't at the fight. When you post a Cleveland paper I'll actually read it.

    Let me help you Gregory:

Cleveland Press -Russell Needham Greb won 8 rounds, Tunney won 1, 1 even
Cleveland Plain Dealer -Stuart Bell Greb won 6 rounds, Tunney won 3, 1 even
Pittsburgh Press -Jim Jab Greb won 7 rounds, "Tunney scarcely won 3"

Pittsburgh Post -Regis Welsh, Tunney won 5 rounds, Greb 3, 2 even. "Welsh said Tunney won by the slightest margin possible"
Cleveland News -Ray Campbell (who went on to work as Tunney's publicist) Tunney won 5 rounds, Greb 3, 2 even

Pittsburgh Gazette-Times -Ray Coll Coll called the bout a draw but in his round by round tabulation gave Greb 5 rounds, Tunney 3, and 2 even

Associated Press -Barney McGuire called it a draw without a tabulation of rounds.

So more people had the fight for Greb than for Tunney or a draw. Still want to believe Tunney somehow figured Greb out or grew too big for him? Nahh

aka, why do you feel you have to hide?? You have absolutely no knowledge beyond articles why are you feeling so smug hiding?
I mean you've shown such brilliance in the past, here are some of your greatest hits, Archer cartel, bald muscular black men, the Shelby deal geniuses, the Dempsey contract, and many more. I mean an acclaimed pysstorian as yourself should know about deals and contracts, and you didn't have a clue. I am sure somewhere there is an article of contracts and deal making, that's basic knowledge, things a pysstorian should know and factor in on his brilliant arguements.

Anyway the hits just keep a coming. Stay tuned to more exciting articles on the same old stuff, Greb beat so and so 5 -6-7 times.

Aka why are you ignoring the fact that Tunney beat Greb good and solid, no question, what happened there? And you still want to believe that Tunney was the same kid he once fought and beat. The hits keep a coming. In aka' next book will contain all the same articles and all of aka's greatest hits and in a special section he has name calling for all occasions.

Folks just when you thought you had a complete list of aka's greatest hits, comes another hit.
'er most papers in that time got their stuff from wire services, and copy was sent over the wires to whoever wanted to publish it in their newspapers even if they didn't go, but a brilliant pysstorians would know that, or should I say should have known.
The "hits" keep a coming. Whats that saying "He who laughs last....
Oh almost forgot one of the best, "those unknown Cubans".
