Saw it Chisora doing several times yesterday, just throwing single jabs to the body without following it up with combination punching. Can't imagine it does any damage, plus it is dangerous to get countered by a straight right hand. So just wondering, is the jab to the body the most useless punch in boxing? Why waste any time on throwing them? :-((
No it is a very good punch actually it takes your breath away a solid shot to the belly when done at the right time is very useful
Nope, Maidana set Broner up with constant jabs to the body in the first round of their fight, and then early on in round two he faked a jab to he body and went up with a hook to the head instead, dropping him badly.
It may not carry too much power, but is to make the opponent think, be ready for the shot, then it suddenly pops up to the face Maidana used this tactic well vs Broner. The first knock down came from a rising shot, which initially looked like the body shots he threw previously (although not a jab to be fair)
If you don't play with and the opponent respects it, the punch creates space and disrupts timing. Floyd used it a lot against Canelo.
Jab to the body is a terrific punch if a boxer has it in his repertoire for a variety of reasons: 1- it disrupts the timing of the opposition 2- If used frequently, it can actually cause stamina issues to the opposition in the later rounds 3- If you're a master boxer like someone like Mayweather, you also can use it to disguise your punches. I used to see him in the lighter weights using it a lot (left jab to the body,) just to confuse his opposition by the mid rounds when he'd start throwing jabs upstairs. When you know how to disguise your jabs well, you'll have your opponent second guessing where the punch is intending to land (i.e. upstairs or downstairs.) Maidana is actually a good example of someone who disguises their punches pretty well (and he also has a surprisingly good jab.) In the Broner fight, he was going downstairs to the body in the first round. When he caught him in the 2nd round, it looked like he was about to throw a jab to the body but it ended up being a left hook upstairs. Broner didn't see it coming.
The jab to the body is used to set up feints and level changes for later on in the fight. mayweather jabs to the body constantly to set up his leaping lead hook for later in the fight where he changes levels, feints a jab or a left uppercut to the body and turns it into a left hook.
it depends, some times it is a good punch to help get a dudes timing down,, so YES its not a effective punch compared to others, however, that doesn't mean its useless,,,, now if you want to argue that Chis was useless with his last night that's fair game.
No it is a very underrated weapon. As are body attacks generally. Mayweather used the jab to the body effectively.
no way, its underrated if anything. It takes a lot out of you if you run into it. Mayweather was great at dropping levels and jabbing to the body.
