How to fight defensively against taller guys who have reach advantage?

I like to move laterally and use footwork for my defense. I think I have good movement for the level of boxing I'm at and the guys I face are usually brawlers or flat-footed counterpunchers.

The problem is I'm really short for my weight, I'm 5'10'' tall 72 inch heavyweight. I intend to lose some weight to get to the amateur 91 kg limit HW division, most people there are taller than me and have reach advantage.

I think I'm a good defensive fighter but there comes a point when it's really hard to handle the reach disadvantage against really tall guys.

A lot of people act as if when you're a short stocky fighter you need to be some sort of come forward brawler, inside fighter or some other primitive style, but I don't like to fight this way. I have really good and fast footwork (I drilled it a lot), good hand speed (for my weight) but the problem is my height and reach.

Are there any good of example of shorter fighters who move laterally and have the kind of style like for example Lara uses?

I really don't know of any shorter fighters that like to move laterally and actually box instead of brawling. I would imagine for shorter fighters it is best to work on head movement, timing, and aggressiveness.

Miguel Canto is a pretty good example of a shorter fighter who utilized a lot of lateral movement. Pernell Whitaker also produced some terrific, movement based performances against taller fighters. Mayweather-Sosa is another example of a shorter fighter using a lot of movement to offset a taller guy.

All of these guys had good head movement and good timing- and they all had terrific jabs. They were able to use the head movement to draw the counter and made a point of establishing the jab as early as possible to get the desired range.

Might be good templates to use.

In other words you fight shltty unskilled locals.

Stay on the outside with good footwork. Beat them to the punch every time. Use your jab to get in and do your work and get out. Don't stay in the pocket with them. Short exchanges and get out. Great head movement also. Never keep your head in the center or stationary. That doesn't mean whipping your head around it means get a nice little rhythm going but nothing too predictable.

If he tries to have a boxing match on the outside against a taller opponent with a reach advantage, he'll get his face peppered all day.

How did Ali manage to beat Terrell, Liston, Bob Foster, Bugner, and Williams by that reasoning?

1st Off - Do not try to compare this guy to Ali. Ali was obviously something else..

    Ali's stats - 78 inch reach - 6'3"
    Bob Foster - 79 inch reach - 6'3"
    Cleveland Williams - 80 inch reach - 6'3"

That looks pretty even to me.

    Sonny Liston - 84 inch reach -6'5"
    Ernie Terrell - 82" - 6'6"

Not that huge of a height difference and I've heard Ali's reach was more like 80. But in regards to these two, he worked them on the outside cause they kept coming forward the whole time so he could walk him into shots. Ali had the speed at his size to do something like that.

    Bugner - 6'4" 82" reach

Ali was getting his ass kicked the first round, trying to fight Bugner on the outside but it makes sense since Bugner learned a large amount of technique from Ali. Ali started making adjustments at the end of the first round, stalking him down instead of trying to outbox. Then he started tagging Bugner repeatedly.

What I do when I'm facing a taller opponent and want to be defensive is moving smoothly out of his reach (head movement and feints inculded), so when he step in a little to hit me I just step in by throwing a counter or just weaving/bobbing.

Once I'm inside I chose to stay inside just evading to make him tired trying to connect and get away until he open his guard or gas out. If I want to rest or improve my view field I just wait until he step back/aside after a despaired combo from him to get out myself and start from the start point.

In resume: Be quicker, move, force him to step inside and keep that distance with good guard and head movement.

I think you are confused about Listons height.

Whether it's an inch or a foot if a fighter knows what they are doing they can use reach to their advantage.

All in all it isnt a good idea. By being a short fighter he has an advantage and can be elusive on the inside. He has to realize his strengths and weaknesses in order to be a good fighter.

    Not confused about anything.

Wiki give those stats, Boxrec is more accurate probably and lists him as 6'1" with the same reach.

Dude.. an inch is not considered a reach advantage. :patsch

Right. Which inside fighting is the complete opposite of outboxing.

    That's exactly what I said.

I didn't need to watch the fight cause your first and main point was already invalid by showing that they aren't that different when looking at measurements.

If I remember correctly from your past posts, you haven't even started going to a gym yet. You really want to do something or go somewhere, you'll find a way. No excuses why you can't make it to the gym. My coach used to run from one side of Chicago to the other to make it to practice, his coach would be standing outside on his front porch to make sure he saw his fighter pass-by to get to the gym.

Spend more time focusing on getting this Passbook
instead of arguing with people that are doing this for real and know what they are talking about.

    1. Look at your post b.itch you did not say 6' .5"
    2. I have started going to a gym
    3. You don't even go to a real gym. I looked up your little "club" and it is just a bunch of people who dksab hanging out attempting to box. College boxing club doesn't equal gym.

I think Cotto is a good example. I used to copy his style before. I don't like him as a person but his style of boxing is really good.
