It's all political. There are similar drugs used in the U.S. that do similar things. They aren't banned. They knew many Russian athletes were using Meldonium. The U.S. and Russia aren't getting along right now. So the U.S. pulled some strings with the W.A.D.A which is basically a Western puppet sports doping authority, to get Meldonium banned, knowing a ton or Russian athletes were using it.
If it doesn't do **** all why take it? If it is performance enhancing then it should be banned, end of. Of course its a PED why would these idiots persist taking it when it was getting banned and they were warned a mile out?
Could you imagine if the russians tested american athletes what type of "illegal" stuff would pop up? They would find some loophole where caffeine or tylenol is banned. Its all political I agree.
Lol at calling Meldonium a supplement, it's a pharmaceutical medicine for people with heart conditions, not a supplement. Now the efficacy of Meldonium as a performance enchancer is debatable but WADA banned it because so many people were using it as a performance enhancer. 124 athletes have so far been caught that's a lot of athletes with heart conditions or a lot of people trying to get an advantage by taking a pharmaceutical medicine.

Povetkin can concoct a story to explain this: He failed a urine test. He can say he heard about boxers drinking their urine in training, and claim that instead of drinking his own urine that he was drinking someone else's, and it was a Russian PED cheat who had been taking meldonium. Problem solved.
Meldonium is used to increase blood flow and carry more oxygen to muscles, thereby enhancing stamina, a trait boxers would want in a long fight.
