When was the last fight more significant that Kovalev-Ward?

Andre Ward says the Kovalev fight is signed. They just need to get in another fight and then determine the venue and date. Tentative date is November 2016.

This sounds good. I'm going to be extremely disappointed if the fight doesn't happen because it matters. It matters a lot.

It's got me thinking. How many years back do we have to go to find a bigger and more significant fight?

I'm thinking it was Pacquiao Marquez II all the way back in 2008. It was p4p #1 and #2 both in their primes at or near their best weight classes.

The Kovalev Ward fight has a similar feel to that. Like two typhoons just coming to a clash.

Fury-Klitschko was much more significant imo.

Fury-Klitschko was not widely perceived to be an evenly-matched contest. The overwhelming majority of people - including myself - expected Klitschko to win. Ward-Kovalev on the other hand is a genuine 50-50 fight in the eyes of most people.

Not only that, but Wlad has been thought of as a boring chinny HW who took advantage of a very weak era. Who did not fight his brother or Lennox.

And Fury was dropped by a featherfisted Cruiserweight. It's the heavyweight division so people wanted to pump it up and get excited, but the fight failed to deliver the goods.

Kovalev and Ward are two guys who most believe are ATG caliber fighters.

Ward-Kovalev doesn't change much. It's the highest skill level fight from both sides we've seen in a long time but that's a completely different matter.

Fury-Klitschko completely changed the Heavyweight scene.

And if Ward beats Kovalev doesn't that completely change the LHW scene?

No? Ward is already considered #2 by most people. If Ward beats Kovalev then Kovalev goes from #1 to #2. Stevenson will still be irrelevant and everyone else will still be too green to challenge either.

But then there is a new man at the top.

I mean Wlad is 39 and has looked like dog poo his last two fights. But he's still possibly the 2nd best HW in the world too.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather? Pacquiao vs Marquez IV? Mayweather vs Alvarez? Donaire vs Rigondeaux? Gonzalez vs Estrada? Lara vs Alvarez?

This is pretty simple. List all the effects of Wlad losing his titles. Then list all the effects of Ward beating Kovalev or Kovalev beating Ward.. One list is much longer than the other.

The best fight of the year isn't always the most significant.

'Significant' is probably too loose a word. Of course it's not bigger than Mayweather-Pacquiao, Mayweather-Canelo, etc. But it's the most even match-up between two pound-for-pound top fighters that we've had for years. It's significant in that respect.

It's more significant than all those in my opinion. Because they're both natural 175 pounders (Ward really is a big SMW) and neither have shown any signs of decline.
