Alexander Povetkin and the 5 stages of grief

    It's interesting to watch this play out on the forum as so many had so much invested in their Ivan Drago, only to have him turn out to be, well, Ivan Drago.

    People go through the five stages of loss or grief at different paces and in different ways, but they always play out.

    Here they are and how it mirrors reactions to Povetkin's positive test for a banned substance:

    1. Denial

    "Let's wait until the B sample is tested." -- only he hasn't to date, as far as is known, even asked for the B sample to be tested, and his own promoter admits it was in his system regardless

    "It was in his system from 9 months ago, it just takes a long time to go away." Only he passed three tests first and THEN failed.

    2. Anger

    This has been directed many ways, but the Povetkin Pumpers are all going through it or have already.

    "F%$@ Wilder."

    "F&%$ Povetkin."

    "F@*#$ the WBC."

    Etc.

    3. Bargaining

    "Well, it's not really a PED." Only it seems every EE athlete of consequence is mainlining it for some reason.

    "OK, fair is fair. Wilder should wait however long it takes for the cheater's system to finally be clean and then the fight should happen." With no consequence for Povetkin for taking a banned substance, of course, and Wilder should have to stay on the sideline and wait this out even though he's already out six figures for an 8- to 10-week training camp in two different countries (with no reimbursement).

    "It's a low amount of medronium. So it shouldn't count." Except that he took it after three passed tests, sometime in April, and it's banned. Period.

    4. Depression

    Self-explanatory.


    5. Acceptance.

    A few fans of the Meldronium Mauler of Moscow have gotten here. Sadly, it will take longer for others.

    Absurd post. There's really just one question: did Povetkin take after Jan 1 or not?

    If he did, then he must have used a masking agent which should show up on the tests.

    If he didn't, then the question arises how come he had two clear tests and then one positive? Given the miniscule amount of agent involved, probably test 1 & 2 had problems detecting that level of agent, for whatever reason.

    The second main issue is what the WBC will do about it.

    If he used after Jan 1 then it's clear that his ass is in a sling.

    If he didn't, then it seems equally clear that Wilder needs to defend or get stripped.

    There's really nothing so dramatic about this.

    Still in the denial stage.

    Maybe the masking agent is one that isn't tested for that the doping agencies haven't discovered? Maybe they flushed it out and fell short?

    But let's deal with facts:

    He passed a test.

    He passed another.

    He passed a third.

    He failed.

    Regardless of what you or I might speculate as to how that happened, the fact is he tested positive for a banned substance after previously testing negative for it.

    No way around that.

    Wilder's career can't hold a candle to Povetkin.

    Povetkin in 31 fights has fought- prime Wlad, Chagaev, Chambers, Takam, Byrd, Perez, Huck and so on. Many prime on this list. What legit prime wins Wilder has....

    Stiverne in 36 fights.

    I agree that his post-Klitschko run has been impressive. WOuld seem to coincide with his discovery of PEDs.

    ? Meldonium was legal until this year. You have no proof of other substances, that is slanderous. What is not slanderous is Wilder's career has been a farce so far. A TOTAL JOKE

    It depends on the sensitivity and consistency of the testing methods. When dealing with such minute amounts your methods have to be spot-on each time. I very much suspect VADA is re-testing those earlier samples yet again to see if something wasn't overlooked. To put things in perspective, the amount detected was well under the "fail" limit of 1 mg as per WADA.

    Once the WBC and testing bodies come to a conclusion, we can talk about PEDvetkin or Povetkin as the case may warrant.

    Rocky would have laughed at 70 ng of substance that may or may not be beneficial, and clamoured to the WBC to let the fight continue regardless. Then he would have stepped into the ring and beat that ass.

    Wilder's feet hardly touched the tarmac as he ran for the airport.

    BTW, did you also get one of those "You could be Wilder's next Opponent!" emails? :think

    Strangely enough you were getting all happy about another fictional character :huh

    To be honest I replied that I would like to be Wilder's next opponent but given that I occasionally have to lift boxes they passed me over for somebody with a more sedentary profession.
