Where was Kitone Lave extra pounds in the 1950s? He came from the same big boned heavy people gene pool as David Tua..:huh
Than LaStarza at 6'2" and 215 vs 5'9" 230 pound Tua or Tua at 5'7 200 vs 6'0" 185 LaStarza? And maybe there will be intelligent discussion about the stylistic implications of this match up beyond Tua crushes puny 50s man? Or if you want to insist LaStarza remain a modern light heavy, match him accordingly.
thing is, kitone Lave was already taller than David Tua was!! if the South Pacific island people have always truly been these thick limbed powehouse types it makes no sense that the shorter one from modern times weighs so much more than the taller one from the past? unless you believe they got heavier as they got shorter? what is your explanation here?
Tha matchup is Tua vs Lastarza, not some mythical Lastarza. Are you saying the lighter heavyweights of yesteryear can't compete against the more modern big men and we shouldn't waste our time matching them up in fantasy fights?
Layne was a busted flush after the Marciano fight. That win and the closeness of their first fight sold the second one.I'm not denying Lastarza was ranked I'm saying he didn't deserve a title fight.A couple of fights previously he had lost to and been floored by a lhvy journeyman who has a less than30% ko record so he was no puncher.. Anyone picking Lastarza ,or giving him a realistic chance here should read Suzie Q's thread about Roland! Too many self appointed keepers of Rocky Marciano's flame forming a circle with the wagons to ward off non -existant attacks on him . He is the sacred cow ,so sacred ,you cannot even match his opponents against modern fighters without being accused of slander!
Layne was a good contender. A justifiable #1 rating. Lastarza was no Jose King Roman was he? I'm not boosting Rocky here. Lastarza was a worthy kind of guy who fell just as short at World level as Tua. And let's face it, all Tua was is a good contender too. The only thing is Tua was too heavy for his height. And by the way You still have not explained why you think the South Pacific people got heavier as they got shorter?
You pick one guy and make a generalisation from that, I didn't realise you expected me to take your question seriously. I don't so no response. Lastarza would have his hands full against Fres Oquendo and Rahman ,Maskaev, Izon would beat him. Read Suzie's thread ,Lastarza was a manufactured fighter.

Layne had recently lost to Harry Mathews and 11-2-1 Willie James a year earlier , he had been ruined by Marciano, the division was in meltdown. Why didn't Lastarza fight Mathews who had just beaten Layne?
You can spin something any way you like it 60 plus years later but the truth is: 1. Everyone wanted to see LaStarza the man some felt really beat Rocky fight him again. 2. Roland's bout with Layne was considered an eliminator to see who would fight Marciano. 3. LaStarza was given the decision against Layne and as such became the next title fight for Marciano. In boxing all it takes is one fight to gain or lose a shot at the championship. This is especially true when the public wants to see a fight occur.
