Bernard is remarkably unathletic. His hand speed is good, his power is good, his foot speed is average. Almost every ATG is exceptional in one of these categories. He doesn't really have punches that wow you. What he has is a tremendous ring IQ, a complete skill set, and a very good chin.

I wouldn't say that. Boxing is a skill game first and foremost and basically every high level boxer is highly athletic ( some fatter HW's excluded), more in the sense of athletic capability as a prerequisite to maximize the skills acquired in training.

So no Hopkins isn't unathletic. Lacking "shiny" skills doesn't make one unathletic.

I should specify - in the pool of fighters who have achieved as much as he has, he seems to be on the lowest end of outright natural physical ability.

Not all high level boxers are that athletic If so they probably would be doing some other sport

:think Makse sense. Most ATGs are known for either speed, stamina or power. Hopkins is remembered for his longetivity.
His physical peak was probably between 93 and 96

Agreed. Thinking about past ATG's they basically all have an absurd chin, power, speed or stamina. They typically go off the charts in at least one of those categories.

Hopkins to me really doesn't have much athleticism at all. Although his chin was pretty solid. He was very adept at not taking the hard shots and never really got into wars.

Hopkins: I'll never let a white boy beat me.

I know one thing he was a racist and still is

I think that honor should go to Juan Manuel Marquez

Hopkins is less athletic than a Roy Jones when contrasted h2h (and certainly doesn't have a style overly reliant upon athleticism, quite the opposite), but is still pretty damn athletic relative to, well, most boxers.

Freakishly so, in fact, at the age when most boxers have seen their most athletic days frittered away in the rearview mirror by a couple of decades.

We're talking relative to other ATGs in this thread though.

Nope. Marquez had a freaking cast iron chin and an almost unlimited supply of stamina.

    :huh

Both Hopkins and JMM have those qualities.. But WTF does that have to do with athleticism?

Marco Antonio Barrera to me fits this criteria. He never really did possess tremendous power, speed, stamina or chin. He was solid throughout, but still not off the charts.

Morales should be in a wheelchair with the amount of flush haymakers he hit him with. Morales just took clean punch after clean punch just unmercifully. He never stunned Hamed despite landing solid. Pacquiao walked completely right through his power shots. Just flat out right through it with zero respect at all for Barrera's power.

His skill though was off the charts. Still in my opinion the most skilled fighter of the 4 great Featherweights of the 2000s.
