Note, I am not asking who was the better fighter or who would have won, simply who punched harder. Patterson, in an interview with Ron Lipton said Ingomar Johannson hit harder than Liston did. And that is saying a lot.
Ingo's 3 knockdowns against Machen (or Patterson down 6 times) vs Mariano's once punch late k.o. of Jersey Joe Walcott? The ref let Ingo hit Machen about 10 times when Machen was tangled up in the ropes before going down ....Machen was lucky he wasn't killed.
I think with Marciano it is how consistently hard he hit. Pretty much every punch he threw had loads of starch on it.
To answer my own question, I refer back to Patterson saying that Ingo hit him harder than Liston. Also it goes without saying that Rocky had far more power in his left hook than Ingo did. We are talking right hands here. I would have to go with Ingo. Although no where's near the quality fighter Rocky was he had explosive power that in my mind was similar to Dempsey's.
Fighters are hit with different punches from different people. Archie Moore named Curtess Sheppard and Yvon Durelle as being harder punchers than Marciano,which really just means they hit him harder.
For one shot power I think it was Ingo. His power was unreal. Its about all he had but when he can hit that freaking hard it can take you a long way.
Boxers opinions seem to carry a lot of weight in this forum ... unless I've been spending too much time in Dempsey threads. :roll: But I think it's obvious from watching their fights that Rocky Marciano punched harder than Johansson did. Boxers make comments like this from time to time. Larry Holmes famously said Ken Norton hit harder than Mike Tyson, after Mike Tyson had just obliterated him. IMO, Patterson (who I am a big fan of) was probably hurt more to the head and body by Johansson in their three fights. The third fight in particular was a real brawl. On the other hand, when you read Patterson discuss his KO losses to Liston, he was so buzzed he either didn't remember going down or he felt no pain. Same with Holmes and Tyson. Holmes was so buzzed after getting clocked by Tyson, there wasn't any pain involved. Certainly not compared to the pain of going 15 brutal rounds with Norton and all the pain involved in that. So, when fighters talk about who hit harder, I think in most cases they are remembering the pain during and after specific fights and not the power. They recall "I was more hurt and felt more pain after fighting this guy as opposed to that other guy." Because quick KOs don't tend to hurt. You may be sore afterward from the bruises left, or where you hit your head on the canvas, but the KO punch itself isn't painful generally. That's why you see guys revived after quick KOs, and they say they feel fine. But you look at a guy after a 12-round war, and he's all battered and in pain and can barely move. They remember the pain of those wars, and there's little pain from a quick KO. Long, rambling post short ... Patterson probably felt more physical pain during his fights with Johansson, but Liston seemed to hit harder than Johansson. And Rocky Marciano seemed to hit harder than Johansson, too.
Take the "Suzie Q"...Marciano did a lot of damage...it took some guys months to get over a Marciano beating...
I honestly think that Ingo's right hand was as good as any in history, thought obviously Marciano was the better all-round puncher.
