You find on this forum that the people with the biggest gaps in their knowledge, are the most dogmatic in their positions.

    You unfortunately typify this trend.

I suspect that most would disagree, including my detractors.

One would need to be an exceptionally great fighter to best Prime Louis. Boxing skills unmatched to this day, deadly ko puncher, best combo puncher ever, trip hammer quick.

Ali because of his speed and movement could and possibly Tunney. Although crowding Louis is said to be a way to fight him I certainly would not want to fight Joe in this manner. Take a look at Godoys face after bout two against Louis.

You are joking, right? Skills unmatched to this day!! I'd like to try some of what you smoke.

Lets get one other thing clear. I despise the ****** filth, but if he gets in close to Louis, Joe doesn't last a round.

Who are the heavyweights who you see as having matched, or possibly even surpassed Joe Louis in terms of boxing skill?

    Matched.
    Holmes
    Holyfield
    Liston ????

    Surpassed
    Ali
    Foreman
    The ******
    Lewis
    K2 brothers

and for obvious reasons. The last 5 have all utilised their own particular assets, and each would nullify anything Louis had with said assets.

The definition of boxing skill is as follows.....

The ability to slip, block, parry, Bob and weave, feint and use clever footwork and then counter with heavy punches to vital areas of an opponents head and body.

None did this better than Louis. Holmes, in comparison to Louis was not in the same ballpark. Why? With Holmes and many others it's all range fighting. All about keeping away, keeping everyone at bey with a jab and hitting from distance. Gone are the classic boxing abilities that Louis possessed. Louis as an example would slip a jab, counter with his own jab stepping in to get CLOSER, then rattle off a 4-5 punch combination. Conversely he would cleverly side step a hard punching opponent, jab and slip punches and counter with devastating effect. If you watch his bout with Lee Ramage you see a bobbing and weaving Louis making a clever opponent miss and then countering with deadly effect. So Louis can stalk and punch, cleverly counterpunch and move or Bob and weave and attack. Only hwt champion in boxing history so diversely skilled that he could alter his game plan to suit the opponent he is facing. In terms of classic boxing skills he is unmatched.

Note for the amateurs......classic boxing skills are not running around the ring not engaging. Classic boxing skills involve being able to work inside and outside effectively and being able to manage working inside an opponents guard. Too many look at a long jab and movement as great boxing. It is not.
